Need White Dwarf Aster Advice!!!!!

Last fall I divided three 8-inch pots of Dwarf white asters I bought at Lowe's - planting 6 . I pinched them back in the spring since they were getting alarmingly large & tall and kept them watered (except for a week when I was gone and DH forgot to water - they got a little brown).

They began blooming like crazy this past MAY-JUNE (I thought asters bloomed in FALL). By August they had turned mainly brown all over and were "bloomed out".

I had read that dwarf asters didn't need any dead-heading. After they looked so brown I experimented cutting 3 plants down to 8 inches high in the hopes that maybe those would rebloom in the fall. Those plants did sprout new fresh green leaves, but no blooms came.

Do they need a year to adjust or is this spring blooming normal? Should I have sheared them back after the first bloom? TIA for any help!!!
