Myosotis sylvatica (forget-me--nots): sow fall or spring? zone 5

I'm looking to establish a bed of myosotis as ground cover for my botanical tulips (T. linifolia, T. kolpakowskiana). Since the tulips are short, the ground cover has to be too. I'm new to myosotis and am planning to grow it from seed: should I sow it in the fall, or am I better off seeding in spring?

I'm afraid you have left it too late to get flowers next spring with your tulips. They need sowing June - August to flower April to June. Not sure if you realise this but they aren't perennial. They are biennial ie sow one year, flower next year, die after flowering. Mine self sow and are already big robust plants which will flower in the spring. Maybe you will have to buy plants this year. Another thing that occurs to me is that your botanical tulips will be fairly short and unless you choose a particularly small cultivar of forget-me-not even they might overtop or hide the tulips.

How true, that they may get too big and overtop the tulips. I planted myosotis sylvatica around my hostas which included some smaller hostas, thinking that it would make a great ground cover but the myosotis is quite robust and growing so well that it covers the smaller hostas!

Thanks to you both for the advice...there was so much conflicting information out there about sowing! I'm glad to have your tips. And yes, I was wondering about the height issue. Do you have a suggestion for a shorter ground cover for botanical tulips? (preferably something in blue...)

Veronica 'Georgia Blue', or another early blooming, groundcover veronica.

I wish I could forget-me-nots. What stops me is all the time I spend pulling out the seedlings, through out my garden. Al

Veronica definitely sounds like the way to go. Better to plant in fall or spring?
