Green Beans on a trellis?

| I have a 6ft trellis I am not using, I bought it for a clematis to cover the ugly boxes on the back of the house. The clematis died from a fungus, so planted another one and it died too, so gave up, and thought about the green beans, which we all love and wondered if that would do it. Thought it would be full enough and they do grow on vines too. Any thoughts? Get mostly afternoon sun, this is for next year by the way. Thank-you Tricia |

| I think you should try the beans. I planted a combination of Emerite beans and purple pole beans and they were beautiful! The Emerite beans have lavender flowers and the purple pole beans had dark purple flowers and they look great together. In fact, I'm thinking of planting them together next year on my archway into the veggie garden, which will be surrounded by flowers. The Emerite beans are green and long and thin (not tough) and the purple beans tasted great...they do turn dark green when you cook them. They make a nice combination when you cook them too :) |

| Yes, buy pole bean seeds. Also, for an early crop before you plant the bean seeds, plant some pea pods :0) |

oh oh! Have you seen the Square-Foot-Gardening forum? (or the veggie forum, which sometimes is busier than the SFG one). They do some AMAZING things in small spaces with their veggies. I put scarlet runner beans up a new fence this year; they did well, but I'll probably put soemthing else up it next year- maybe viney cukes, or some flowery thing. Anyway, figured I'd toss it out there; I stumbled across it early this year, and found it very helpful. Good luck with your new trellis! |
