Planting perennial plants in 'early spring' in Zone 6 NJ

I have a wonderful NJ plant book - and am spying perennial plants to buy (rather than growing from seed - have no real great sun source to grow much from seed) from nurseries in Spring and plant.

However, book says to plant many of these in "early spring" (or fall, which is too late now, not that the ground is frozen yet, but nurseries all out/won't ship, etc & too little root establishment time). But in NW NJ zone 6a last frost date is late May - 2/3 into Spring! We all plant on or after Memorial Day here (had snow in early/mid-May 2 yrs ago).

When should I plant perennials in Zone 6a NW NJ when instx say to plant in "early spring"?

Thanks! All the Best,

Tree

PS I did a search & could not find this topic answered already, so if it's discussed at length continuously, my advance apologies!
