What a beauty, have you thought of potting it up just in case it's not winter hardy, keeping it in a protected spot and take cuttings in the spring when it starts to grow, I would. Then you'd have more plants to experiment with next year. Sorry I can't help with which one it is tho :(.

This reminds me a lot of a very late blooming mum I used to grow. It was a passalong plant from an elderly friend of my mom's so we never knew the 'real' name but always called it the "Christmas mum" as you were pretty well guaranteed it would be in full, seasonally appropriate bloom for the holidays. I used it often in holiday arrangements.

And yes it was very hardy for me, but then most mums - even florist mums - tend to be perfectly hardy in my climate. And I would assume most would be in CA as well.

Hi, thanks for the info. The original photo shows the flower a more rose color but it's a deep velvet red. The plant is about 3' tall but it doesn't get as much sun as it should. Can mums be grown from cuttings? Because the stems die back in winter. I really want to keep this guy alive but it's too big to bring in.

Ok, now there's a realistic pic. Man, that is a beauty - that color is fantastic! It is a perennial so even if the stems die back it might return next year. If you want to be certain to have it again, take cuttings from new growth, they should root without much difficulty.

beautiful mum! absolutely take some cuttings and pot them up. I had a few pieces break off some of my mums this summer and I just stuck them in random pots. They not only rooted and grew, but they also flowered.
