How many colors?

I have used the weed forum to identify the monster that destroyed the azaleas that were with the house when I bought it over 15 years ago. According to the research, the entire beds will have to be dug out and I have to be extra vigilant. The weed is smilax I think.

The question is I wish to put in a new perennial bed. The foundation plants will be encore azaleas. They will be red or salmon.

How many different colors should be in a perennial bed? I am thinking of reds, purples/blues, yellows, and oranges. I need a pop because my home is not very close to the street. I have experience with perennials but, they were in the back yard for cutting. I live in Fort Washington, MD. Thanks for any suggestions.

It should be as many colors as you want it to be :0)

Do whatever makes you happy and you think looks good with the house. Everyone has a different aesthetic and you may hear various "rules" tossed about, but you're the one who lives there and ultimately are the one who needs to be pleased.

My general rule of thumb is that no matter what color scheme I have in a bed, I always include some yellow and some white as accents. They'll give it that "pop" from a distance. Even if it's a pastel bed, I use yellow - a lemony yellow rather than a golden yellow.

I'm with mxk3 - do what makes YOU happy! :-)

I third the motion for what you like. On the other hand, I think that a smaller bed MIGHT call for fewer colors, and a larger bed can easily accomodate more. The colors you name are the makings of a hot color bed. Assuming that the reds are warm reds (yellow and orange undertones), they will be very harmonious and the blues will be great complements. I don't see how you can go wrong with this scheme, regardless of the size of your bed.

Although I also think you should do what makes you happy, I am happiest with a limited color scheme and prefer cool colors.
Mostly I use all blues and purples -from palest to darkest- and the spectrum of pink to deep red to plums.
I do not use any peach to orange tones at all. Plenty of whites, and some yellows though.
It really depends on the season too, with the softer pastels in the early spring moving to deeper darker tones as the seasons progress.

I have lots of pink encore azaleas and sasanquas that I'm not crazy about because they seem wrong for the autumn season!

I did set out some fall zinnias with deep orange tones and they worked well with the blue ageratum, red begonias and yellow marigolds.
