follow a thread

I will post in this forum as I don`t see any sub forum dealing with general inquiries re forums2gardenweb.com.

First and most importantly to me....how can one subscribe (that is get email notification of new postings) to a thread without having started the thread?

Is there anyway to see all the posts made by a given User Name?

i dont think there is a function to notify a 3rd party of answers to posts that are not their own ....

and try the search box with the user name... see link.. unfortunately.. it is not limited to only their posts.. but all posts they post in ...

RE: follow a thread

This is discussed often on the "suggestions" forum.

While on GW, you can search within 1 forum, or all forums.

iVillage treats the GardenWeb forum entity like an unwanted 2nd class citizen. It's ludicrous that participants have no way of "subscribing" to discussions or whole forums. Not much about these forums has changed since the last century.

RE: follow a thread

Then I am very surprised that forums2.gardenweb.com is as popular as it appears to be. Being able to 'subscribe' to a thread would seem to me to be crucial in maintaining a forum's popularity.

RE: follow a thread

Well, Gardenweb is in pretty good company, because Craigslist basically hasn't changed its format since the last century either! But those might be the only 2 popular websites on the whole Internet that haven't, lol.

The ability to edit posts, more easily post pictures, and a better search engine would be nice features to add to GW.

I too want to follow a thread! Sheesh!

I found this through searching. I don't grow many perennials, but damn. I sure would like to follow a few threads! They've got those annoying ads that pop up all the time as I read if I accidentally move my mouse. You'd think that would be reason enough to make this more user-friendly.

Does anybody know who RUNS Gardenweb?

dowbright, you can disable the in-text links. See below.

RE: follow a thread

What am I missing?? How hard is it to follow a thread, making the assumption you remember the thread title? I have followed the same thread on GW for months at a time, a group to which very few threads belong, so how difficult is it to track one that may appear only for a week or two?? Gosh, it seems that the longer we are engrossed in the digital age, the more we need to be hand-fed!! Is cyber intelligence now an accepted replacement for human intelligence?

It is extremely easy to to install any variety of pop-up blockers on your system to avoid any ads or other annoying messages that appear. Or try installing Firefox as your primary browser.

GardenWeb is owned by iVillage which is a subsidiary of NBCUniversal. You can email GW directly - see the 'Contact Us' link at the bottom of this page - or post messages in the 'Suggestions' forum.

For folks who have a lot of criticisms, it seems like very little is really truly known about this site. And I'd also wonder how many of these posters with all the criticisms have actually been participants on GW since "the last century". The changes have been rather significant - comments like these previously might have gotten you sent to Disneyland :-) Anyone remember what that meant??

Changes have been significant? Care to elaborate? I've been around since 2001 and I can't think of a single change, except for the addition of annoying ads. Like you I use Firefox with Adblock Plus. I took a few spins in the teacups under Spike's reign. Things were very arbitrary back then and still can be today. Mature discussions vanish when someone complains because it offends their sensitive sensibilities.

Thank you gardengal! You covered all the bases perfectly.

RE: follow a thread

I'm with gardengal here, too, but only "discovered" the forums in 2006, which was probably after the departure of Spike.

You fire up the computer; how hard is it to use the favorites feature to refer back to a forum that interests you? The thread title changes color when a new response is added.

Maybe I've got more time than others; maybe I'm interested in a wide variety of forum topics and scan many of them in my daily computer time routine. I tend to remember the thread titles of particular interest. Lord knows, I don't want any more email notifications than I currently get.

 o
RE: follow a thread

We don't necessarily need e-mail notifications, but I know on other forums there is a feature/function where you can watch a thread; when you open the homepage, there is a listing of watched threads which have new posts. At that point you can click on a thread, and then there is the further convenience of just clicking and going to the new reponses instead of having to scroll through and find it. It is rather convenient, IMO. I wouldn't NOT visit a forum if they didn't have it (like GW) but it is handy to have those functions.

Natal, I love the way you worded that - you took a few spins in the teacups under Spike. That made me chuckle! Unlike the proliferation of ads, which have definitely become worse, IMO.

Dee, I visit a forum like that too. Very convenient, but it's no big deal that it's not possible here. OTOH, it sure would be nice to at least be able to edit posts.

 o
RE: follow a thread

I agree with you completely, natal - not a big deal that we don't have it, but wouldn't be bad if we did. And yes, editing posts would be nice too!

gardengal wrote: What am I missing?? How hard is it to follow a thread, making the assumption you remember the thread title?

There are so many topics in this very diverse and rich GW forum which one may find of interest even if one isn't the 'originator' of the thread....and there is no way I can keep track of *all* of them....and there is no other forum that I participate in that doesn't allow for simple tracking of ones interests i.e. the ability to subscribe to a thread.

And so I ask "how hard is it for the iVillage to implement a few simple changes which many of us would find useful?" The key is customization. If you choose to use your brainpower to juggle all the threads you find useful gardengal then all the power to you but now that I am older I reserve my brain power for more important things ;).

RE: follow a thread

dowbright of course you are right and you aren't asking for much. This topic has been discussed even more recently:
