Since this post has sat here unanswered for a while I will throw in my meager knowledge. Ginger is considered suitable for growing in tropical or Mediterranean climates. The word "tropical" is always sends up a big red flag which means just maybe the plant can suffer a rare brief drop in cold temperature but thats all. I think you should grow it in a pot if you are going to grow it but in my mind, that would make it a House Plant.

Thank you for answering! You are exactly right. It did send up a little red flag last year at the store when I first saw them. They were cheap and pretty so I bought them. Dug them up last fall and put 'em in a box to overwinter. We don't have room for more plants in pots inside. Guess I will post them on the exchange forum. Thanks!

They grow them all the time in Austin and that is 8B. I grow Tumeric and that is a Curcurmin. I think it really depends on the exact ginger or species that you have . There is quite a variation in the hardiness between the species. Some are hardy to 7b and maybe colder. They like rich moist ground with good drainage. My Tumeric got to 16F last winter un mulched and It was very late appearing in spring. I thought they were dead but they came back nicely.

There are 2 curcumas's and lots of gingers at Plant Delights and they list them at 7b and 8a mostly but some are colder. They list the Zones. I bet some judicious mulching might get it through the winter and give the plants some good drainage. It is always risky pushing the envelope but I know people who area successful.

I don't see the one I have listed. All the label says is "curcuma hybrid". If someone wants to trade for it before the temps get too cold I will dig it up. Otherwise, it will be a wait and see next year. It does seem to like its location. It's had several blooms and many young plants among the full sized ones. I think I started with 5 originally and now have maybe 20 including the smaller ones that have not bloomed yet.

It is annoying not to know the exact name of a plant but I will keep searching.

Why don't youThrow a pile of leaves over it and maybe some burlap to hold the leaves down.
