How to tell Arizon Sun from Gobln Gaillardia?

Posted by flower_addict88 7A NC (My Page) on

I bought four plants from Lowe's. They were labeled at Arizon Sun Gaillardia. However, I am not sure if they are Arizona Sun or Goblin. Is there anyway to tell?

I just bought them and planted them 2 weeks ago.

Thanks,
Danielle

It would be pretty difficult to tell the difference without a relatively large group of each, but in general 'Arizona Sun' has a neater, more consistent habit, both in terms of height and flower production/display.

I have Goblin, and it looks identical to a standard blanket flower aside from the compact habit. The yellow edge is wider than what I see on the Arizona Sun. I winter-sowed AS this year, but haven't seen blooms yet.

From Bluestone's website, it appears that the red on A. Sun is more of an orangey tone than the red of Goblin/Standard Gaillardia, and the yellow is merely "tipped" vs. the wider band at the edge of Goblin. While they state that Goblin is a 12" and A. Sun is 8-10", size in anyone's garden we know is subjective based on conditions, so I'd be more inclined to note any differences in the coloring.

Will look forward to seeing pix next season from you!

I agree with coolplants guy - you will have a hard time distinguishing with just 4 plants. 'Goblin' is a dwarf selection that is open market - seed is produced by a number of breeders. Because it can come from numerous stock beds, it can be pretty variable in habit and bloom color and pattern. 'Arizona Sun' is another dwarf selection, seed is produced only by Ernst Benary (Germany) and in our trials, it has exhibited more uniformity and stability than Goblin. That said, it is entirely possible to have a percentage of Goblin plants that look identical to Arizona Sun. Either way, you should still have some nice plants.

Thanks everyone I was just curious. I figured it would be hard to tell.

I've never bought any mislabled plant from Lowes. I just thought the yellow band was wider than in the Arizona Sun variety.

I need to stop posting so late at night, like when I started this thread. I always make typos then. lol

goblugal-
What do you mean when you talk about 'stability?'

I was referring to the stability of the color pattern from plant to plant
