Yucca - How to get rid of it

I renovated a large bed in front of my kids school a year ago in September. We took out the barberry and yucca, which were not very kid friendly. I dug down into the soil about 12-18" to remove all the roots, etc of the yucca. We planted all new plants and it looked great, until last spring, when all new yucca's grew and filled in the corner of the bed. Now they're growing in between all the new plantings.

Is there any way to kill these? Any way without killing or digging up the new plantings?

You could try selectively painting the Yucca sprouts with Roundup, but Yucca (especially Y. glauca) is a very tough plant, hard to eradicate and you will probably be seeing new shoots for a long time. Removing the desirable plants and redigging the bed may be the best option.

More on the Yucca problem here.

havent i given you the roundup/generic method before, mom???

cut off all green ... best applied to the root ..

apply 100% roundup to all cuts using the high priced applicator at the link ... brand is not as important as the twist top that allows single drops or lined of roundup ..

as soon as new green shows .. repeat application ...

100% roundup is actually 41% ... NOT THE COMMONLY SOLD PRE-MIXED ... aka diluted ...

repeat 3 or 4 times per year.. until it gets the idea ...

clearly mark the container with XXX and hide from the kids.. or better yet.. since you dont dilute it.. put it back in the original container.. and clean out the applicator ...

roundup only works on green material .. and a white root w/o sun is green ... it will not have any effect on the soil ...

you are NOT going to win with this monster.. with any organic solution.. as far as i am concerned anyway ... this is one plant that i would not run over with the truck ... fearing it might harm the truck.. lol ...

i have always meant to ask.. are you a pathologist.. or CSI???? Merry Christmas ...

Flooding it for some weeks would do the trick I think. Or watering heavily in winter. That's how mine were killed.

I think you have to just keep picking/clipping away at the emerging yucca shoots it until the roots run out of stored energy. Luckily it's slow-growing so you don't have visit too often, unlike other weeds notorious from regenerating from roots.

Anything that keeps the shoots from getting light will also help - Yucca is NOT a shade-tolerant plant. So you might try planting something dense and bushy directly over where the shoots are coming up.

I have to take exception to ken's comment that roundup only works of green material. I live in the woods and every year remove several live growing trees. I paint the cut stump with 41% Roundup within an hour or two of its being cut, concentrating on the cambium area. In twenty years I have never had one so treated regrow. Al

hey big AL .. whats this nonsense about disagreeing with me ... lol

this is the perennial forum.. i didnt go into it working on the green layer of cambian under the bark of a tree.. in this instance ... cut me some slack man ... lol

i have also killed many a stump with the stuff.. and barely used any .. due to the high priced applicator at the link above ...

but due to its rather glaucous thick foliage [in other words.. it has a waxy coating].. i would not be surprised if foliar application had little or no effect.. and that is why i would go after the root itself ...

it would be akin to treating a blood disease with a topical ointment.. yeah.. it might work.. eventually.. but if you want to go at it .. open a vein.. or a root .... if mom is a pathologist .. maybe that will be clearer ...

mom must be dealing with a dead body.. since she hasnt come back ....

BTW.. i was chuckling about this one today ... prior owner planted them 100 feet down the driveway near the road ... way out there.. not 100 feet of them .. and when my wife to be.. moved in.. she ran them over multiple times.. before she figured it out ... net effect???? well take a guess ...

ken

ps: they multiplied ... lol

ps: want know how i got rid of them .. I MOVED 65 MILES AWAY .. lol ...

RE: Yucca - How to get rid of it

I killed an established yucca by spraying with Roundup but by someone's advice, I added a little dish soap to the solution to help it stick to the leaves. I also had to repeat after it returned, then repeat again, then for good measure I put a big flat rock over the spot and it finally gave up.
It might be easier in the long run to transplant your desired perennials to another area while you're killing the yucca.
