Yep, it’s time for our 3rd annual Pond Forum Super Bowl pool! The previous 2 years, by most accounts even the most uninterested of participants said they had fun playing in the pool. So play along even (especially) if you couldn’t care less about football (~99% of you here).
![]() HOW IT WORKS:
Once all 100 squares have been filled, I will use this random generator to assign a unique number between 0 and 9 to each column and each row (where you currently see the '?' marks). These numbers will represent the last digit of the score of the game on Feb. 4th. For example, let's say that you have decided to pick squares 13 & 77 and after assigning random numbers the grid ends up looking something like this. So let’s say that the half-time score ends up being:
In this example, since square #13 bears (some pun intended) the winning combination of 7 & 1, then you win!!! Alternately, you’d win if the final score turns out to be:
PRIZES
Also, there’s a new bonus round for this year’s pool… When you pick your 2 squares, also let me know your prediction for the SUM of the final score. In other words, if you think that the final score is going to be 28-21, you would pick 49. Remember, you cannot pick the same grid squares as somebody else, but you CAN pick the same sum score. Person(s) with the correct sum will also win $20 each. So even if your squares land less than ideal score numbers, you can still have a shot at winning the bonus prize with your psycho….errr… psychic prediction! The winners can choose from the following prizes:
A NOTE ABOUT YOUR PRIVACY: I respect your reserved® rights to privacy. If the winners opt for a gift certificate, I will need a private email with only a first and last name and an email address to complete the transaction. If you feel more comfortable, this information will be for your 3rd cousin 4 times removed. I really don't care who it is as long as you feel confident you can get your gift from that individual. I will update the grid every evening. If you inadvertently pick a square that's already occupied by someone else, you will be assigned the closest available square. Initially, the pool is open to ALL Gardenweb members. If more participation is needed to complete the grid, later this week I will invite members of a mountain biking association that I frequent to play along. So w/o further ado, jump in the pool by filling in the blanks: SQUARES: ___ & ___

Follow-Up Postings:

| Bonz, my friend, towards the end of last year's thread you had reserved® squares #7 & #36 for this year's pool. Unless you tell me otherwise, those are yours! Don't forget to post your Sum Score. |

| 39 and 14 please. Thanks for doing this again. Lots of fun. CT |
| Ooops - sum of my score is 53. Just saw that after I gave 39 and 14. Thanks. CT |

| Many thanks from the best coast, too, Football gi! :D Ok, I'll take 86 and 63...and my SUM prediction is...oooom...35. I hope that either Indy or the Bears wins. :D No, really, I'm for Indy, but that doesn't matter, so ignore this. Brenda |
| Thanks, Semper for your great efforts again! And thanks for "saving" my numbers. (Can't believe a whole year has gone by) I was going to pick 61 but see that Horton did, I was thinking 27-34, I'll go for 65 |

| well, i was going to say 14 adn 30 but i think someone has 14. i don't care what score is to what team :) so, how about 21 to 30 = 51. thanks, semper! |
| Hi Semper Fi, I will bears 31 and the Colts 21 for a total of 52. Really I don't care what the score is as long as the Bears win. Thanks for having the game again. Mike |
| I'm IIIIINNNNN!!!!! I want number 12, in honor of Tom Brady, and 22, in honor of Samuel. They did good. That with the score and adding, eh, lemmesee, the Bears win, 35 to 6, because whatshisname misses the conversion on their only touchdown, total, 41. I'm not sore about the Pats losing... honest... :) Mary *Semper, you're tops* |
| *C3D, good choice! I couldn't think of a better number than 13 myself!!! *Mikey, Oooorah right back at you. *General Goosi, did I mention there is a prize if you keep your shoes ON?!?! :-) *Brandy, "best" coast, eh?! Things that make me go hmmmmm...... I've got 2 words for you: Nancy P... errrr.... NEVERMIND! ;-) *FTM & MIKE_IL: Something in IL water??? You told me the sum score but you both forgot to pick your 2 squares. Let me know. *MaryO: GREEEEEEDY! 3 titles in the last 5 years. Ain't that enough? Besides, the Pats have whooped up on my beloved Steelers in the playoffs so much in the recent memory that there's no love lost there! :-) **************************************************************** |
| OOOH, I'm in. Squares 1 and 99 please. Score will be 28 to 7 = 35 for the sum. I'm not tellin' who's gonna win :P |

| SQUARES: 11 & 68 SUM OF SCORE: 41 I hope we don't have mercury in Texas water!!! (Just don't eat the Gulf shrimp) lol |
| I hope the Colts win, afterall, they used to be the Baltimore Colts, before they slipped away in the dead of night and locally became the Baltimore Dolts:-) Still, must be loyal to the past team I guess. On the other hand, maybe not, Go Bears! |

| That's better! Thanks FTM. Brandy, I knew you'd see thing my way! ;-) Don't get me started on the Ravens! Believe me, it's for your own good. LOL! **************************************************************** |
| I pick 47 and 69 |
| Sorry about that Semper Fi. I'll take 31 and 55. Mike |
| How about 83 and 94 with a cumulative score of 42. Thanks!!! |
| Could I have squares 50 and 57? And a total score of 38. And a cherry on top! |
| That's mo' better! Thanks Mike. BTW, I *think* I will be rooting for your team even though I really like both teams a lot. How can you not like a hard worker and a great player in Payton Manning? I would cheer for the Bears unequivocally if it wasn't for Rex's dopy behavior (trying to take a timeout right after a timeout; trying to run into the locker room at half-time with time left on the clock; etc...) and his erratic performance. Then again Ben Roethlisberger with his 23 QB rating in Super Bowl XL proved that this is truly a great TEAM sport. George, long time no "see"! Welcome back my friend. Jeanner, one order of 38 flavors with cherry on top comin' up. **************************************************************** |
| OK, I'll take 26 and 33 cumulative score of 59 Nanahanna |

Still waiting to hear from some of the forum veterans: Ademink, PondmaninFL, Mamabirrd, etc... If you keep in touch with them, please feel free to invite them to come & play along before the grid is complete. **************************************************************** |

| Semper, Don't you or Tally get any numbers? C3D |
| "Don't you or Tally get any numbers?" Me? Heck no! Even the thought of cheering for myself in this game is making me nauseous! LOL! Tally the cat? Hmmmmm..... I think you must have misunderstood me before when I said she's like furball. I AM trying to train her to say: "RAH!" intead of "MEOW" though. That's not considered animal abuse, is it?!?!? Besides, I do think she might have some football in her lineage though. Didn't PondmaninFL briefly come back under another username? Of course, they might have traced that IP address and blocked it too. That's ok though. In the years past, MaryO and some others have picked squares for the absentees. Feel free to do the same IF you have a way of getting in touch with them should their square(s) land a winning combination. I'll go ahead and add Scott since I'm pretty sure I still have his email somewhre. Oh yeah and Poo3, since "Poo's boy" has now participated in this forum, please feel free to ask him to pick 2 squares also.... or you can pick for him. |
| 51 and 80 - so sorry i've been slacking!!! LOL andrea |

| Semper, Semper, Semper ..... You don't train a cat. They TRAIN you! Troy would probably say "RAH!" for you before Tally would. LOL @ the football kitty! :-) C with 3Ds |
| "Besides, I do think she might have some football in her lineage though." If that isn't a fine example of Powder Puff football, I just don't know what is.... There she is! *waving @ Andrea the slacker* LOL Brenda |
| Sum of the final score???? um... 37!! Cause that's what I turned today! |
| Thank you Captain Slacker! And thank you Brandy for summoning said slacker!!! :-) hnladue, interesting strategy picking your age as the sum. Wonder if that's why Z-Chick picked a billion?!?! :-))) *RETREATING BACK INTO MY FOXHOLE* |
| So does that mean I have picked a final score of 131???????? Not only am I a slacker...I'm also an idiot!! roflol *waving back* |
| Ademink, now I'm being a slacker too because I didn't realize that you forgot to post your guess for the final score! Your SUM score doesn't have anything to do with the squares you've already picked. Just make a prediction for the final score, add the 2 numbers together and post that sum total here. Somebody probably needs to summon Captain Slacker again!!! *HINT* FYI, since the grid still had 14 empty squares left with less than 5 days to go, I just asked the guys from a work-related network (thay were in the pool with us last year) to help in completing the grid. Hopefully, Mamabirrd and other GW members who have yet to participate will get a chance to do so before it fills up. |
| With the power of the spirit of PhatBoy behind me *looking behind me*, I summon...Meerkat's Mommy! Someone should certainly summon sums....shortly. Brenda |
| it's so bad that i'm sitting here trying to figure out what the potential scores could be...i'm thinking ok...x amount for a touchdown, x amount for a punt....uh...1 for a field goal so .......*shorting out* lol!!!! i'm going w/ 68. |

| Nah. It's my I.Q. Oh! Oh, wait! It's how many light years I am aheada you, Sweater Boy. Actually, it's how many years it'll be before the Browns play in the Superbowl. But I can wait. |
| Actually the answer is 'D'(all the above are true). DANG IT! She's got a mind like a steel trap that Z-Chick. Alright! The grid has been filled. That was quick, no?! I'll assign random score numbers to the grid by Friday. I'm actually getting excited about this game. Not like last year, of course... but at least on paper it appears to be a great matchup and SHOULD be a good game (I hope). |
| Thanks for all your time semper fi! It's gonna be below zero here for the next few days, I need the distraction. |

| UPDATE: The grid is complete and random scores have been assigned to it. I used the random generator mentioned in the original post and came up with these numbers for the I'll tally up all post the sum scores tomorrow (Saturday) night. Good luck to everyone playing along. |
| * Sheepco, did you say BELOW zero??? Alright, refresh my memory....Exactly why do people live in MN again?!?! :-) This past Monday on my way to a pre-dawn mountain bike ride, I hear the flunkie weather guy on the radio say that it was 5°F with the windchill. He then compares OUR relatively tame weather to MN!!! I about drove off the road laughing because I have experienced the wrath of MN weather once before. *Mikey, Mikey, Mikey!!! I have an ever so slight suspicion that you (we) are pulling for the Bears, right? Or is it the Clots?! Yours truly, |

| YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS....GO COLTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'll be watching the game OUTSIDE on the Circle downtown during Outreach. Holy COLDNESS...single digit temps! We can only see the game through the window of the radio station, not hear it. I'll tell you what though, you don't get any better commentary than a bunch of wound up guys with their home team in the SuperBowl! The semi-finals game was a BLAST and the city came unglued afterward!! |
| "The semi-finals game was a BLAST and the city came unglued afterward!!" As well they should have. That was an AMAZING football game (sorry MaryO!). I have the utmost respect for Peyton Manning... an awesome QB and an incredibly dedicated player. Anyway, here are everyone's over/under scores... If you like, you can print the scores (Right click on the image and choose "Print Picture") to keep track during the game. Since PondmaninFL got an absentee ballot, I had to pick his score for him. I gave him 27 since Florida was the 27th state in the union. Besides, my gut feeling is that this will be a low scoring defensive struggle. |
| Yep, -19F at 7:30 this morning, only a little wind so it felt like 45 below. The high was -7F. Colder tomorrow they say. Windchill -60F. As of the 6 pm news we've been below zero for the past 84 hours...but who's counting.... Can someone explain to me why we're seeing the SB ads the day BEFORE? Now they've wrecked the whole day for me! |
| Yeah, Andrea!! Ok, I'm really going to cheer for them now. And I do love Peyton; great sense of humor. But I have 2 words for you....thermal undies. :D Are you seeing the ads on TV, Sarah? If so, I'd bet the sponsors are not too happy, either, considering how much $$$ they're spending for SB ad time. And I have 2 words for you....:D Brenda |

| OMG, what a start to this game! Came to pick up our scores. Sorry we didn't get the offer for the extra 2 squares in time for my soldier boy. Gotta go...missing a commercial :) |
| How does one of the most accurate kickers in NFL history miss a chipshot field goal??? Gotta be the Ju-Ju magic working here!!! :-) I think I freaked out the animals with my screaming as they did not expecting me to get psyched about a non-Steelers game THAT much. LOL! But I think once they realized that I was trying to get the winning score to land on our C3D's square instead of PBBarb from the mountain biking forum, I think they all understood completely! So congrats Chickadeedeedee... Or as they say around here: "RAH!" The squares outlined in yellow indicate that they had the correct score at one point during the course of the game. The ones in red indicate our winners. All but 2 people are still in contention for the bonus round for the total final score. Good luck everybody in the second half. |

Congratulations to the Colts and their Fans! Well played!!! Mike and C3D :-) |
| Dang! "Fearless" from the MTB forum lands the 2nd-half winning square AND the correct final score with his, well, fearless prediction. Sorry Mikey & Mike_IL! It's practically impossible to win a football game when a doofus QB throws such lame ducks, trips over himself, can't even handle snaps cleanly, etc., etc., etc.... The SUCK factor was in full swing today. It's just gross man! Thanks ya'll for playing along. See ya next year. |

| Congratulations Fearless! WoooooHoooo! Thanks Semper for doing the pool party again. C3D |
| "How can ya possibly go wrong with a number like 13 ?!?!?" LMAO!!! I didn't even realize that was THE square! It's like the entire universe revolves around THAT number. Well, mine does anyway! :-) C3D, please post or email me which prize you want. Again, the choices are: Thanks! Hmmmm.... this time last year I was on cloud 9 because "my" team just won the big one after a longggggg hiatus. Today I was on (or at least near) cloud 9 for an entirely different reason... ![]() I do think that the Mountain Gods were smiling at the Colts today. They even ordered me to deliver an interesting message to them. Freaky, no?! |
| My god, is that snow? Rah! Rah! Way to go Colts! Thanks for the fun Semper! |
| Yeaaaaaaaaaaaaah!!!! WHAT A BLAST!!!!!!!!!! We froze our (_:_)'s off out there but we had a great time! LOL Downtown was INSANE after the game! Hey, we also were in the paper! | So CD3 wins?? KARMIC man!!!!!! |
| Good game and from a Wisconsin point of view "Da Bears Still Suck". I didn't expect them to play as bad as they did, though. I'm sure we'll hear about how the weather was a factor. End result is the right team won. It was a good game, some of the commercials were pretty funny. AND... Semper did another outstanding job. He gets my vote for MVP. Good job and thanks!! By the way, Mark, I saw a cartoon and thought about you. It was about marine and his dog, Semper Fido. And if you squinted, the dog coulda been a Dobe :) |
| Congrats, Chicka!!! You GO, girl! Ok, you WENT, girl! LOL And Fearless was unbelievably lucky in this one (or psychic). After that Bears (92 yard?) return at the beginning, I thought the Colts were in deep doo-doo. At least the Bears made a record with that first play. The weather sucked, Prince was surprisingly awesome, and Andrea made the front page!!!!! Woohoo!!! Are you thawed yet? I really think the final score should have been 22-17, since I KNOW that Colt stepped out of bounds in the 2nd half (CBS sucks when it comes to replays...and what is with Jim Nance always riding the fence?? At least Phil has an opinion...). *deep breath* GREAT party, as always, Semper to the Fi! Thank you!! RAH! Brenda |

Yes, as I have learned, the suck was with the Bears yesterday. The Colts were awesome! Congratulations to them and their fans!!! |
| *"My god, is that snow?" (Doing my best impression of PondmaninFL): Amazingly, that's only 17 miles from Semperville and we didn't see any snow here last week (just some ice). Of course, I thought it was rough out there yesterday until I saw a picture somebody had posted from my mountain bike club from their ride just north of here on Saturday. __________________________________________________________________ I can't imagine! I found it ironic that the Colts, a dome team, managed the crappy weather better than the Bears who play in MUCH, MUCH, MUCH worse weather throughout the season. Go figure! ___________________________________________________________________ Brandy I gotta agree with you.... that guy's left foot WAS out of bounds. Not on the initial catch.... but as he intercepted the ball he then slid his left toes back which appeared to touch the sideline. Inconclusive evidence, I guess. _________________________________________________________________ Chickadeedeedee, you found my one and only soft spot. Maybe it's just me but I can't think of a better way to spend that winning than the USO! :-))) I'll up the ante to $50 on behalf of Camp Nappy Resort & Entertainment Center and Birdie B&B. God bless. |

| Well gosh darn Semper! That is so nice of you to do! We here at the Camp Nappy Resort & Entertainment Center and Birdie B&B would like to match your generous donation as a gift to the USO on behalf of Semperville. Snow? You call that snow? This .... Now this is snow! A Camp Nappy etc.,etc. snow!
| Yeah, Chicka! And the best girl won! Also, immo, the best team definitely won! And, by the way, we were surprised they did as well as they did catching balls and staying on their feet in that rain - you try to hold on to a dripping wet ball with dripping wet hands while a dripping wet guy slides into you on a dripping wet field. Ah yes, it was lots of fun. And I agree on the ads. We saw a handful during the last few days before the SB that were obviously meant to be SB ads, but cheaper... :) Mary |
| Dang! Trumped by the Nappies again. That be a whole lotta snow. Of course, it could be worse! Much worse!!! Still haven't heard anything from Mike_IL. Hope he hasn't done anything rash after that loss.... like becoming a full-time Aquascape installer! :-) |
