Ladies of the night...strike that....[that's another group, sorry] [note to self. get that back key fixed]

    Start again.
    Ladies of the Pond Forum,
Please accept my external..s--- internal...s---again.... eternal [got it] gratitude for your kind best wishes.
There is George Washington and me, plus some sundry others, who share this date as a birthday.
Just think ladies,I could be your next president, anything is possible.
My platform would be no wars, no algae blooms and free fish food for everyone, including the fish!

"Mrs Horton" is taking me out for supper, Marsala Tiki curry with fries, instead of rice and a pint or two of Guinness stout to wash it down.
I'll be sleeping alone to night, I dare say, after that lot starts to ferment. LOL

    Thanks again.

Newfoundland English is one of the first English and Irish background languages spoken in the New Word. Depending on where one lives on the Rock will decide the dialect. It is one of the hardest to understand in some places, in fact many Americans won't understand a word anyone is saying - similar to the actor Colin Farrell speaking Irish-English - ever hear that? He uses an American accent when he acts.

A few from below the link, right?

Whadd'ya at? Loosely translated to How's it going? or What are you doing?

How's she cuttin'? to which one often responds Like a knife.

"Right" which operates as a stand in for the Canadian "eh".

Where ya to?: Where are you going? or Where are you?
Stay where you're to 'til I comes where you're at.: Wait there for me.

Flat on the back for that!: An expression of approval from a female speaker. LOL

What's on the go?: What is going on?
Get on the go: Let's go (also, a common euphemism for partying)

Does anyone else have interesting dialects from their parents, grandparents, that are said today? Any local expressions?

Here is a link that might be useful: Origins of Newfoundland-English

Sarah, no no no, "Newfies" come from Newfoundland, an island of the east coast of Canada. There are thousands of them scattered through all of the country, USA and the rest of world.
I think they kept a few hundred back on the island for breeding practices, and they don't need to practice as they seem to excel at it!

They are the brunt of kindheared jokes, similar in vein to the "Polish Joke". These jokes I'm sure are made up by Newfies about themsevles, they have great huour.

    An example is,
The Newfoundland Provincial Government were alarmed at the growth rate among the islands populace.
So they sent out free contraceptive jelly to all the women of Newfoundland, in an effort to cut the island birth rate.
After a year a census was taken and it was found the birth rate had almost doubled.

A survey was done among the islands women and it was found that the women were reluctant to use the contraceptive jelly as it was very runny, plus it made their morning slice of toast taste funny!

P.S. Thanks Sandy for your good wishes :-)))

LOL @ toast and flat on the back for that! They sound "normal" to me. :D

Sarah, do you have da Fargo aksent goin on then? That has to be my favorite dialect in all of the U.S.! It's so unassuming and safe. I can't imagine someone from up north saying, "I'm goin to blow yer head off now then, donchaknow." LOL

Well Happy early birthday to you too Sandy just in case I miss it! Is Zinnia, Semper, Mike, or Floyd around to say Happy Birthday to too? Doesn't matter if I am early or late with birthday wishes ;)

I'm glad to be back and missed quite a few of you.

Here's why I'm back- to suck all of your pretty little brains of their essence. I'll be starting a new concrete Neoprene coated pond sometime this summer and no sense me screwing up with filtration systems and such when I have all of you! I've got the brick selected and delivered to the site, the limestone sills selected, and have an idea in my head for the basic dimensions and style but that's about it. And yes, there will be a bottom drain and no... no rocks on the bottom of the pond (couldn't resist). I'm going to have to pull something together before September. Idealistically, I'd like this pond up and running by next spring. It's my birthday present to myself... using my husband's check book.
