| CT, just as a side-bar to this illustrious contest I want to say how much we enjoyed the photographs of the mother, pups and adopted squirrel. That was so wonderful to see! Isn't nature awesome, It's survival, survival, survival, even if you have to lay down with dogs!LOL Was the photograph recent? I ask because I'm interested if the relationship between the mother and the squirrel is a lasting thing? That is quite something for sure. I saw a goose, a dog and a cat all together, supposing-ly doing their neighbourhood watch patrol, on a TV video clip show the other evening. The three of them shown just wandering all over the place together, taking everything in. It was hilarious! |
|
| Horton - these are not my dogs or squirrel but the plan is to release the squirrel. I can tell you from personal experience a similar event when I was 10. I found a whole nest of younger squirrels (tails not bushed out yet) downed from a summer storm and we put them with our mother cat and kittens. The cats and squirrels lived outside in a shower house. The mother cat raised them all - we did no bottle feeding. She weaned them all at about the same time. My sister and I collected acorns for the young squirrels. It was not soon after they were weaned they took off to live in the trees with other squirrels. IMO - squirrels are hard-wired via instinct to be squirrels (not puppies or kittens) and once away from the litter of pups or kits they soon forget the experience and return to the natural instincts. In fact, once 'my' squirrels started 'looking' more like squirrels (with bushy tails and leaping into the trees) - the cats forgot they were once litter mates and chased them up the trees (not fully being playful anymore). Each became what they were naturally intended to be - with no confusion. The squirrel in the photo IMO, is pretty big to still be with the pups and bottle fed - so I can't say if the hard-wired instinct will remain as intact as my squirrels, but my guess it will be OK if they let it outside near their home, if suitably wooded, and feed it nuts and other appropriate squirrel food. I think it would be fine, acting like most other suburban begger squirrels do, filching off feeders, etc. It's not like they should dump it someplace completely devoid of humans, etc. It either makes it or it doesn't, but had she not taken it in, it would be dead already. I don't think they should be kept as pets IMO. Baby squirrels mature faster than those pups, so she needs to not think they are the one and the same in their requirements and put it outside. Anyway - back to our esteemed contest. |
