The Little Red School Bus ....

.... came to Camp Nappy.

Sounds innocent enough, doesn't it? But remember dear reader, things never *quite* turn out as they initially seem at Camp Nappy.

Someone gave me two Sugar Glider babies. OH how cute! We had a family of SGs 10-15 years ago and they were so much fun. We still had the huge cage that housed our SGs so we were all set! The lady gave me the two youngsters in a container they used as their nest. A little red school bus.

I brought them home and we set up their new home with some willow tree branches, parrot rope toys, an assortment of dishes that held mealworms, water, Glider-ade, jelly, baby food, chopped up fruits and avocado. OK! We're all set. We placed the sleeping SGs in their new enclosure still in their bed and left them alone. As night time came they woke up and started their familiar sound known as "crabbing." They are unfamiliar with their surroundings and call this alarm sound. They continue for a few minutes and curiosity over comes them and soon they are exploring.

They are running up the branches, swinging from the rope rings, playing with another toy that has a bell and grabbing the jelly with their tiny hands. They seem to be happy and we left them alone to continue their play at night.

About 1:30 AM someone is crabbing. Hmmmm. That's odd! It sounds very loud. Too loud, in fact!
EEEEEKKKKK!!!!!

There's a baby SG in the hall! Three cats are watching this little one scamper across the floor and climb up the wood frame of the door. Oh yes. They DO glide!

How did you get out of the enclosure? How did you get out of the aviary!?!?

I scooped up the little one and placed her in the bathtub. I closed the glass door to the tub and went in search of the other SG. I turned on the lights to the aviary frightening all the inmates inside. Well, crap! The other baby is missing too! I looked in the living room and there's the other one running across the couch. Of course, where else would he be? ~SIGH~

I got this little one and was going to place him in the bath tub too ... OMG! How did YOU get out?

The first captive is running around in the bathroom! The cats and the dogs think this is great! They're just all sitting in a semi-circle watching the SG do her thing! LOL!

Hmmmm. Must have climbed up the shower massage hose. Stupid me for not thinking of that! OK. I took the hose and just tossed it out over the top rail that holds the glass doors. We moved their little dishes and their little bus into the bath tub. They'll be safe in the tub until we can figure out a more secure home for them. They must be still *just* small enough to get through the wires of the other enclosure. We closed the glass doors, turned out the lights. Good night little Sugar Gliders!

Ahhh. Everyone is safe. All is quiet.....

For about 15 minutes.

OK! NOW WHAT? The crabbing has started again! How did you get out?!?!? There's a SG running across the counter in the bathroom! There's three cats and the two dogs having the best time of their lives watching this fuzzy creature.

The SG was scooped up and placed back in the bathtub. We try to see how could he have gotten out. The willow branch that was placed in the tub for entertainment was removed. Maybe they're able to get to the hose still by leaping from the branch to it?

There will be no more escapes! Good night!

Mmmmmmmmm. Now we got it right. 113% guaranteed they can't get out now! Or at least until 5:30AM!
Let the crabbing begin!

How in the heck are you getting out? I ask the little Sugar Glider as he clings to a bath towel...?!?!?!? No reply. As I am putting him back in the supposedly escape proof "lock-up" I see the partner in crime jump from the soap dish to the door rail and looking to jump up to the top rail. LOL! They DO glide!

OK. You kids have had enough adventure for your first night here! Back in bed!

They were escorted back to their little red school bus and the door was closed. They soon went to sleep as dawn was breaking and they had had a very exciting time.

OMG, that's the cutest little bus I've ever seen! Those little Houdinis! I love the image in my head of the cats and dogs sitting in a semi-circle, watching the show. LOL!!!

Thanks for another GREAT story, Chicka! *big ol' smile*

LOL!! Can't wait for the next chapter after you and Mike spend your Saturday escape-proofing the SG enclosure! What will tonight bring? And I'm so glad the Nappy Campers are such good dogs and cats and didn't have SGs for a midnight snack! They are cute little buggers!

Once they were safe, I got a kick out of it myself. One of these days I am going to see one. They sound like they are such fun. Sandy

I'm glad you inherited the sugar gliders C3D. You know how to take of them properly. I see so many sold and the people who buy them often don't have a clue and they expire in short order. One of the downsides of the pet trade for some species IMO. The Little Red Bus is cute.

The little SGs must have graduated from Houdini School . Top Honours too, dontchaknow?!?!? LOL! We do have nice animals here. I think they are just so used to seeing something new all the time they are more curious about the latest guest rather than looking at it as a potential snack. Good thing! No more escapes since our first memorable night together. They have moved out of their bus and now sleep in their glider pouch.

Seems like everyone wants a sugar glider but few want to put the time into their proper care. ALL the ones I see as patients have horrible nutritional problems and when I explain that they need a variety of foods and on and on many people just kinda look at me like I'm kidding.

No. I'm not kidding. That's why your SG is skinny, falling over, has diarrhea and sores on his bottom ....

The lady I got the kids from was given the parents because the original people didn't want them any more. There were two babies in the Mom's pouch and when they were able to be on their own, I got them. Actually I'm the one who gave her our SG babies many years ago. She told me what comes around ... goes around. LOL! :-)

Our SGs lived to be 11 yrs., 10 yrs., and 12 yrs. The last one passed away three years ago.

I don't think they, or hedgehogs, lizards, skunks, raccoons and a bazillion others should be kept as pets either. But ... seems if they need a home ... we'll find one or make one here. What else can we do? My avian vet friend told us we should have a TV show. We wouldn't even have to leave home!

A Camp Nappy reality series? Frightening! LOL!

Oh, I'd watch THAT reality show faithfully, Chicka! Camp Idol without the elimination rounds. LOL

A few of the exotics at the clinic where my sister works.
The vet there, Valerie Campbell, if really great with all kinds of animals that come their way. The practice takes everything, large and small and is open 24/7.

Dang! No camels here either. Hmmmm. Lemme think .... We have had an ostrich, a few alligators, skunk, red fox, tarantula, assortment of amphibians and reptiles, crabs (red, fiddler and hermit), llama and alpaca, the little pocket pets, hedgehogs, birds galore...

Several years ago a circus was in Cleveland and one of the elephants was ill and someone called to see if I could come out and check the elephant. LOL! I was tempted to go and have the receptionist tell everyone that I ran away with the circus. :-) But ... since I am not very familiar with elephant medicine I gave them the phone number to the Cleveland Zoo and the veterinarian there who is much more familiar with elephants.

Sorry, no way I'm doing ANYTHING to a tarantula! That's why I'm a tech and you get the big bucks :) !

(and yes, I understand the concept of "it's more scared of you than you are of it". I don't care, it's a hairy spider!!!)

Yeah, I love those TV shows where someone is terrified of something, and the "experts" are trying to fix them of the problem. Like fear of spiders...so they bring in a big, hairy tarantula right off the bat!! No starting with something small, like a wolf spider or daddy long legs, right? LOL!! *heebie jeebies*

    Alpacas and hedgehogs, yummy!!

The Tarantula's name was Otis. He fell and split his abdomen open. I tucked the stuff back in and used surgical adhesive for the wound. He's still doing well over a year later. :-)

Chicka, bet they taught you that in vet school huh?

I'm not scared of spiders, it's just that I think a Golden Retriever makes a better pet. But what do I know? To each their own (as long as I don't have to touch the tarantula :)

LOL! No. We didn't have a tarantula medicine class. But it seemed the right way to approach his condition and it worked out well. Can't really stitch him up. That injury is one of the most common for them and there's similar treatments in various exotics and wildlife medicine books for the tarantulas.

We don't have a tarantula at Camp Nappy either.

Ok...poor Otis! I'm glad he had you for a healer, Chicka! I've heard of many tarantula owners who say their pets are very cuddly and sweet, with personalities. I'll take their word for it. :)

Thanks to all this tarantula talk I got goosebumps on my goosebumps. And then to picture a tarantula with his insides outside. The goosebumps on my goosebumps now have goosebumps.

LOL! Truth be told ... Otis creeped me out at first too but I can't make judgment calls if someone is hurt and looks to me for help ... Even if they have multiple eyes! I've not had a tarantula but Otis was someone's beloved buddy and had a major boo-boo. (Sorry for throwing out technical medical words.) I don't know how cuddly he is but his family cared enough for him to get help and that's all that maters in the big scheme of things, no?

He did come back a few times for a recheck and we were all happy to see Otis again and grew quite fond of him! He does have a charming personality ... in a fuzzy large spider form.

I guess that's all anyone could hope for when they are in need, no matter the species. If you need help there will be someone who cares enough to care!

Then there's the story of C3D on a 6 ft. alligator. LOL!

Dang! We do need a TV series don't we?

CD3 this reminds of the time I had a pet Raccoon named Randy. One day I noticed a pink bubble (looked like someone had blown an bubble gum bubble) on his stomach. With all the hair on his belly, I couldn't tell what it was. And was afraid to look too closely, thinking maybe he had a hole in his belly and his intestines were sticking out. So I picked him up and took him to the vet. I walk in with him in my arms and the vet say's "wait a minute". So he goes to the med. closet gets out a bottle and a needle and comes back. Tells me to lay him on the table and he puts him to sleep before he will take charge. Well I leave him there and they call me later to tell me he is ready to be picked up. He is in a cage and they have wrapped the latch with a whole roll of adhesive tape to keep him from letting himself out. It seems that he had been trying to "mate" with his baby blankie and had irritated his male apparatus and caused the blister. Boy was my face red. Well, I contacted the Univ of Fl zoo and they had been wanting to find a male to go with their Female in the Raccoon Habitat, so everything worked out well. Glenda

Sugar gliders are such fun aren't they!!!! I have 7 right now. I just lost one girl who was probably 10-12. What's more fun is when you feed them something they don't like and they throw it at you!!! Food Fight!!! And ya know... I have no bug problems in my room..... we have ants, but for some reason, not in my room!!! The cats aren't sure what to think, but my gliders have no fear of them and think of riding them like in the rodeo.... the cats weren't amused. I don't get much crabbing, but I do get barking.... at 2am... because someone heard something that startled them.... so they take turns barking..... all 7..... usually turning all the lights on makes them stop, but not always!!! oye.

    Enjoy the kids, CD3!!

    Heather.
