My parents did not read the Camp Nappy memo about refraining from having more chickies so here I am! Baby cockateil about 3(?) weeks old. :-)

Yikes! I thought you were talking about the old Web Master. You gave me quite a scare there, Chicky. He is adorable, unfurled feathers and all. Sandy

Wonder what Olive looked like as an infant? She saw Spike and greeted him nicely:

Well HiiiiiiiIIIIIIIIIIiiiiiiiiiiiiiii! Who the birdy? How are you?

Note: She did not call him Sweetheart. That's reserved for her Barry-boy-toy and Pretty Boy. :-)

Hey, Spikey!!!! Lookin' GOOD, Buddy! Glad the Rogaine helped, because if I correctly remember the Camp Nappy memo about tail feathers, you are going to need them to fly. Looks like yours are growing well. You are also showing your rosy cheeks! What a cutie!

OMG I just love the pics! Baby birds are so fragile yet so tough. I am in awe of you CD3 for being able to grow those chicks in to birds. I would love to see more pics as they grow.

    C3D,

I hate to say it, but the little dove baby looks only half baked. Can you shove him back in the shell till he's done? hahaha

Poor Barry... Tell amusingly handsome Spike to share some of his Birdie Rogaine with Barry.

Baby dove's nest is lined with the same kind of blue surgical towel. It gives the babies really good traction so their legs don't splay out and result in a fatal hip deformity where they cannot stand.

I'm amazed how quickly Spike grew and looks like a real bird. He's about 1/2 the size of Mom and Dad. No first flight yet.

Yeah, the dove does look a bit better (Jimmy Durante came to mind when I looked at this pictue), but no where near as handsome as Spike. I think I'm in love!!!! hahaha

Give him a birdy hug for me.

LOL!!! @ DFledgling!! Don't look down, Spikester! LOL Awwww, they DO grow up so fast! What did he think of his first flight, Chicka? Was he excited and proud?

We missed the actual flight but Mike heard some odd cries from the aviary. When he went inside he saw a near panic stricken baby Spike on a high branch screaming! LOL!

You know how those DFs can be. He must be afraid of heights too! :-)

No frantic cries now. Spike's an ol' pro already.

LOL!! Awww, poor Spike! I wonder if MY DF let out some odd cries, too....LOL!

My DF asks, "How long do cockatiels live?"

Hi Brenda's DF! Cockateils can live for 15-20 years. Of course there's some variation depending on genetics and how they are raised.

Great news from Camp Nappy Resorts and Recreation Center. Our new brochure will *clearly* state that human visitors will be given a minimum of one dove as a souvenir. 8-)

Jean, they are *very* sweet birds! But keep in mind I'll likely say that about any of them. :-) Spike is doing very well. I guess they take their first flight at about 33 days of age and he'll continue to be fed by Mom and Dad for another 3-4 weeks. Spike's already got a future home. His new people are readying things for their feathered bundle of joy. The lady who gave me the little red school bus of sugar gliders wants to have the next baby cockateil.

Eeeeekkkk! They're planning another? BTW ... The same lady gave me two more SGs! Someone I know wants them so hopefully they are temporarily here ... as one gleefully scampered across the livingroom yesterday! Long story ...LOL!

The Orange Weaver Finches are up to their chickie plans. Who knows how that will work out.

No five o'clock shadow on Barry's rump yet. :-( No solutions offered for the problem either from Barry's vet. Leave it to me to be able to stump the specialist! ~*~SIGH~*~

Baby Spike went to HER new home yesterday. I think the baby cockateil is a female. If you flip the birdy on her back and feel for the pelvic bones ... if there's a gap between the bones large enough for your pinkie finger to get between, that's big enough for an egg to pass ... hence a female. The males have pelvic bones that almost touch one another. No gap.

Of course little Spike still has growing and maturing to do but there is a gap between the bones. I suspect that gap will enlarge as she matures. From what I've been able to tell, that is true for the birds I've handled both the wild and the pets. This may vary with species and maybe vary with breeding condition too. Of course I haven't handled all the bird species out there although some days it seems close! LOL!

Mom and Dad are sitting on MORE eggs as we speak! They too are ignoring the NO NEW CHICKIES memo.

So did the Society Finches.... *~*~*SIGH*~*~*
