Water Hyacynth Blooming in October- Zone 5b

Well the weather was weird and cold all Summer. The WC never bloomed and who would expect them to. They need day temps of 80 degrees and nights in the 70's I have heard. But on a cold dreary October day I snapped these pics. NEVER try to figure out Mother Nature. lol

RE: Water Hyacynth Blooming in October- Zone 5b

The hyacinth bloomed from October to November in Zone 5 in my settling pond this year. The only thing I can figure is that the overcrowding of the WC triggered the blooms. Usually we get a light dusting of snow on October 3 or 4th and a slight warming with freezing temps in November. This year the first dusting was a month late on November 3. As a ponder who is well aware of the weather I think something different is going on. Cool summers and relatively warm Fall weather. Perhaps a cycle from the past now come back. I was speaking with an oldtimer in his 90's who remembered that all the years of his youth and middle age that the winters were mild into December, and then the cold hit. He told me "We had flowers until December". I am admiring the roses blooming right now in Zone 5 and remembered the conversation I had with him.

Regards,
Lisa
