Hardin.

I saw the news reports on the ice storm in OK. Hope you and your pond and your family survived okay.

Good luck,
Anne

RE: Hardin.. did you and pond survive

We came through just fine. We were much luckier than many people. Our power didn't go out at all, just a few surges which dimmed the lights. The husbands parents have been out of power since it began. They are total electric, so they can't even get water, as they are on well water, and alas, the pump is electric as is their stove. I am lucky to not be total electric and so even if the power went out, I would still have heat (which is most important), because I have a 3 burner heater that runs off gas only.

I have alot of broken tree limbs, some in the driveway, and another tree has dropped down so far from the weight, that it is laying on top of my garage. I'm hoping when things start melting, that it raises itself back off the roof. There were about 150,000 people without power. The people who work for the electric companies have worked 24 hours a day, and have done very well getting the power back on, but with so many lines down, it takes time. We could see transformers blowing up all over town one night. It would light up the sky with a bright blue flare.

Sadly, there was an older couple killed when they brought a propane tank into the house for heat, and it exploded. The lady was inside and the husband barely escaped, but he is in bad shape with major burns over most of his body. The house was a total loss.

One thing about this storm, is everyone was a little better prepared. The weathermen stressed the importance of being prepared, and stores around town sold out of toilet paper, propane fuel, generators, oil lamps and the oil, lanterns, matches, potatoes, bread and all sorts of things. Fortunately, we went early and didn't have to battle the full aisles at the store.

Stay warm, everyone.

Vickie,

Glad you are weathering the "storm". A lot of our linemen have headed your way to help. We were spared the brunt of the storm even though we normally have that type of weather in the winter.

We are glad of the help. There are so many that need it, and it great to know that so many travel long distances to help.

I don't know how all those that live farther north of me manage the winters. I have a hard enough time with the few days we actually HAVE snow and ice. I'd probably be crazy enough to dig a deep hole in the back of my closet and along with an electric blanket and several months supply of Oreo cookies, no one would see me until spring. LOL.

LOL.. yeah, sometimes we do that too - when it gets about 20 or 30 below zero. The rest of the time we are outside doing active things like skiing or snowshoeing or ice fishing (though not on the fish pond)

My favorite is snowshoeing.

I do have an ankle length goose down coat for the really cold weather. You get used to it. makes Spring even more worth-while!!

Glad to hear you are okay.

I think your weather is worse in OK than we have here in Michigan. Sure we get an occasional bad storm but we don't get the ice and wind (or tornadoes) like you do. 6 inches of snow falling isn't really bad if there isn't ice or wind. We all just slow down a bit. ;) When we do get the ice, we just go a little slower.

There is nothing more peaceful than watching the snow falling (with no wind)late at night. An electric blanket and oreos however, never hurt!

Tonight the sky was still light when I left work. Spring IS coming!

I can certainly attest to the wind. I think that is one of the positive things about this ice storm. Had the winds been blowing, we would have had alot more damage to trees, homes, and power lines. As it is, they are trying to declare 77 counties as needing disaster relief. It is being said, we should expect another round later this week, but I don't think it will happen. *fingers crossed*

Yeah, the light is hanging around longer in the evenings. And, you are right. Soon it will be spring. Jan and Feb are not my favorite months. I am a hot weather loving person. Give me 90 degrees days any time.

Thanks to all for thinking of us.
