This is from last summer. I cannot wait for it to warm up so I can expand on this. I put cannas and elephant ears in and around it. Everything grew like crazy! It was such fun. I still had some trimming to do around it but wanted to share a picture of it anyways. Enjoy...

| That looks so nice. You are taking exceptional care of you plants. Do you have any fishies? |

| I have 2 Koi (purchased from a garden center in Michigan), 3 goldfish (from walmart) and 2 bluegills that I caught while fishing on the river. They are now in an aquarium until the snow melts. Everything is covered in snow and ice right now. |

| Your pond is not large enough for 2 Koi + 3 goldfish + 2 bluegills unless you have a very good filter. My pond is similar with the blocks except that most of the volume is below grade. How many gallons do you estimate your volume is? |

You are probably correct that it is/was not big enough. I already have someone lined up to dig me a real pond as soon as the ground thaws. This was my first step into the pond world. My DH agreed that we need a real one now. He was not to excited about it at first but we enjoyed it so much over the summer that it did not take to much convincing. I just need to come up with a plan now to make the fish happy and all of the plants that I want to put in it. kalevi - do you have a picture of yours? |

that is a beautiful little above-ground pond! i'm sure you get a lot of pleasure from it. be sure to dig the in-ground one as big as you possibly can because the looks of the empty hole can fool you - they never turn out to be as big as you really wanted once you get the water in. maybe even use a hose to outline the perimeter before you begin to dig or better yet, lay cardboard over the whole area so you can get used to the size and location and make adjustments before you dig. i wish i had room for another one. enjoy! min |

| This is my pond in early summer. It is 3' deep in the center with ~1' deep planting ledges for pots all around.

| Oh yes kalevi! I love your pond! There's nothing like being able to sit right next to it! |

| Great examples! I never had a pond till I moved into this house (came with the house, fish too). I can see if I ever move I have many options to always have a pond, I'm sure I always will! |

| kalevi and gardening_wi, I'm curious how you handle your little ponds during winter? Do you need to keep a deicer in them? |

| I let mine freeze. I didn't drain it because I didn't want the liner to get damaged. I have the fish in a huge aquarium. If I get a chance I will take a pic of it this afternoon and post what it looks like covered in snow... |

Does it freeze solid, and does it hurt the liner? I let my 300 gallon Rubbermaid stocktanks freeze a couple years ago and the bottoms split open. :( |
RE: Small Backyard above ground pond I made

| Yes I am almost sure it is froze solid. I won't know how the liner will be until the spring thaw. I then plan on draining and cleaning it. catherinet - bummer about your stock tanks. |

The liner will be just fine normally even if it freezes solid as the liner can flex with the pressure as long as there is not a sharp rock under that the ice can push the liner around the rock to the point where the rock can push through it. The problem with the stock tank is the drain in the tank. What happens is as the water in the stock tank freezes it slides up as it does in an ice cube tray. But a stock tank has a drain in it and this locks the ice so that it can't slide up and that puts a lot of pressure on the drain and the bottom until something gives usually the bottom. Mike |

| My pond is 18" below grade. It does not freeze solid. I do use a thermopond to keep a small hole in the ice. I need to keep a small tent made from plastic sheet and abs tube frame over it to stop the snow from swallowing it. |

| Beautiful ponds both of you. I have an above ground pond, sort of. I have a ramp on my porch that goes around three sides of it and I keep two large aquarium heaters in it and it doesn't freeze. I'm in zone 6 and it used to freeze but didn't hurt the gold fish. Barbara/olelady |
