Thinking About Converting to an External Pump

My 1500-gallon pond has no bottom drain and uses a submersible pump inside a plastic file box stuffed with scrubbies. The pump feeds into an up-flow skippy filter made from a stock tank. From there, the water recirculates back into the pond via a waterfall.

It's a pain to haul the filter box out of the water to periodically rinse out the scrubbies. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to improve my setup, possibly with an external pump? If I go this route, what kind of filtration will I need on the intake to keep debris and small fish from getting sucked in?

I wonder why you are using an in-pond filter as well as the skippy. The only reason I know of to enclose your submersible pump is to keep small fish and large debris from getting getting sucked up by the pump. This just requires some kind of mesh "box" around your filter. I use one of those little box filters from Home Depot/Lowes without any filter pads or media in it. The only maintenance required is to check once in a while to be sure nothing is clogged.
