why no tadpoles?

At my former home I had a large pond that required almost no attention with large numbers of frogs - eggs - tadpoles each year. At my new home I constructed a pond, use
non-chlorinated water, have water lilies, and watch the frogs come. The jelly egg masses appear, but that's as far as it goes. What could be preventing tadpoles from developing? What can I still do at this time to perhaps improve the ecosystem for spring and summer?

There are lots of critters that love to feast on frogs eggs, including fish. Have you tried to protect the eggs? There are devices that are sold just for that purpose.

I had many toad eggs that did not morph into tadpoles last year. Didn't find any answers when I googled. Your guess is as good as mine.

Hi Andyg:

My pond is going into it's 5th season. For the first three I had adult frogs (green & leopard) doing their thing with no tadpoles. Last year goodkarma posted directions for making floating plant islands as well as gifting me with one. The frogs love to sit on the islands and call to each other all summer. Apparently they laid and fertilized their eggs there too. The tadpoles were able to survive hiding in the planter holes and between the plants where the fish can't get to them to eat them. I have koi, shubunkin, goldfish and one blue gill. To my surprise when I broke down the pond last fall and dismantled the islands there were tadpoles galore. I collected them in a bucket and placed them in my settlement pond to overwinter. I have been running a stock tank heater all winter to keep the settlement pond from freezing over (see pics). Hopefully my frogs and tads survive this winter. You may want to make a few of these floating planter islands to see if it works for you too. Here is the link to the directions. Happy frogging. I am so looking foward to spring.
