 o
Lotus roots from an Asian market?

Can fresh lotus roots destined for consumption be expected to sprout?
And if so, any idea what type they may be, or their hardiness compared to the commonly cultivated forms?

Thanks.

I tried that once, it didn't work. The lotus root just rotted. Don't know if it's because of me or the lotus root.

Some have had success with them and some have not. I've grown mine from seeds, except for one that I bought from a pond shop. That one died and my nephews unwanted dog ate the others when I floated them in Spring.

As to what variety they are. They could be anything but there is a good chance that they are probably Sacred Lotus.

Spin off question - what is the difference between a lotus and and water lily?

Thanks- yes it looks like the growing points aren't in the greatest condition, but will try anyway seeing that they are bought.

Storebought were too fragile here, was looking to try anything else.
