Unfortunately, only time will tell. So your Chawan Bosu was in a pot that was above ground? Do you have lotus in your pond? Did you use a deicer?

The pot is sunk at the deepest point of the pond. The ice got within a few inches of it even with the deicer running. At -24 there was not much I could do.

I would be hopeful, winemaker, since the roots didn't freeze. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you!

If you drain the water out, scoop down through the middle of the pot where there is likely to be no tubers, when you get to the bottom of the tub, you can work your way outwards until you come across tubers.

Tubers and runners tend to be ambling around all the inside surfaces of a tub, on the bottom and round the sides

Blackened withered ones are old and gone, fresh smooth pale coloured tubers are good.

Take care not to jeopardise any growing tips, thats what the lotus relies on for future development of runners, tubers, foliage and blooms

Winemaker As long as the pot didn't freeze solid it will be fine. The tubers dive to the bottom of the pot looking for a way out. So if your pot is on the bottom so are the tubers of the lotus. If you've grown lotus in a pot you know that they always grow out of the drainage holes. Mine always do. I believe they will be just fine as long as the pond is deeper than 18 inches. I would invest a small amount on a deicer though the work great. They only come on when the water gets below 40 degrees and once the ice melts it will stay melted.

I you really wanted to, you could probably even pull the pot out of the pond and slowly and gently put your hand down into the soil. If everything you feel is mushy, its probably dead. But if you feel some firmer tubers, they should be okay. Just remember the more robust ones will probably be at the bottom of the pot.
