 o
purple dime sized leaf

A few days ago I bought a lotus tuber locally in Hawaii. the sign said pink bali lotus i think its a tropical variety.

anyways, it already had three stems coming out and beginning to open. two of them opened except both are tiny and a little broken, but what i have never seen before is the full purple color of the leaves.

Im not too concerned because i can see the tuber growing and white roots are just beginning to come out. I am curious though, as to what could cause purple leaves? --sometimes on my other lotus, the veins are very purple too.

Also, when using fertilizer tabs, how deep should these go down? should i shove a couple to the way bottom now, when the tuber is still sitting at the top?

Thanks

I've only grown lotus once, and I'm pretty sure that the first leaves that came up had a purplish tint to them. Are they still purple, or have they greened up?

I push the fertilizer tabs about halfway down in all my plants, lotus and lilies included.

Yes, it is not unusual. They will turn green as they get bigger. I also push my tabs halfway down. The Bali variety is a good idea. I ordered mine from the mainland and it took a lot of effort to get them to bloom. Lots of leaves but few blooms. The momobotan variety had purplish tinges on the leaves also.
