Artificial fish - do they work?

I'm thinking of removing the net from my koi pond, and have been looking online for ideas on how to protect the fish from predatory birds. So far, the ideas that have most appealed to me are a motion-activated sprinkler and protecting the koi pond with fishing line.

Another idea that's intrigued me is the use of artificial fish. The idea is that you place a realistic-looking artificial fish in the water, and birds will choose your easily caught fake fish over your real fish. The bird then becomes frustrated with the lack of real fish in the pond, and will leave the pond alone.

Does this work? On the one hand, the concept seems plausible, but on the other hand, I'm afraid it'd also attract more birds to the pond. Has anybody tried this?

Also, if anybody knows of a store in Australia (preferably Perth) that sells these, that would be appreciated.

Yes,

Herons have been reported battering at, tangling with fake fish. Attach the fake fish to a rattly, tangly, clunky anchor, for example threaded through tangly bits of net, porcelain, largish pebbles and that would help alarm the fish to go into hiding...
