New Pump Question

I need advice on a new pond pump. I currently have Sequence Series 1000 4300SEQ20 with a Baldor motor that needs replacing. My pond PVC piping is 1.5". I am looking into replacing this pump with either an Evolution ES 4500 or ES 5500. The intake and discharge for the Evolution ES pumps is 2" rather than the 1.5" on the current pump. I will have to put in a 2" to 1.5" transition for both intake and discharge on the new pump.

I want to maintain the same flow if not more. Does anyone see any issues with this?

Thanks,
-Mike

i would check on the specs for that pump, and find the amount of feet before any head loss.i would go with the 2in. pipe, you will get better flow to the filter.if you did not get the pump yet, look into the preformance pro artesian 1/4hp.will pump 9 1/2 ft. up before loosing any head pressure.

RE: New Pump Question

Mike,

Every year I disconnect the pump around November. I clean it, drain any water and store it in my garage. This past weekend the temp hit 70 in NJ so I decided to hook it up. I plugged it in to test it in the garage just to make sure everything was ok, (normally I would go through the motions of hooking it up first). I could hear the motor but it was not spinning.

I took the intake apart and tried to turn it by hand and I could not budge it. Being a very inquisitive person, I disassembled it by taking the 4 LONG screws out of the back. Once I took the screws out and the plate off I was able to spin the assembly.

It now turns but the sound level definitely indicates that something is not just right. The documentation says no lube needed so I didn’t want to go crazy greasing the whole thing.

Rather than hook it up and have it fail, I was just shopping for something new even though it has performed well for me since late 2005.

RE: New Pump Question

Mike,
From what you are telling me it sounds like you removed the fan cover by removing 3 screws. Then you removed the fan by removing or loosing one screw on the fan to remove that. You then removed the four long screws from the end cap on the motor. With those removed you were able to remove the end cap. At the end of the motor shaft was one of two bearings in the motor. To fix the motor you would have to replace the two bearings which is not hard to do. First you would have to remove the volute by removing 7 bolts and nuts on the front of the pump. Once the bolts are removed the volute will pull off the front. The impeller is remove by hold the shaft from turning and turning the impeller counter clockwise. It will unscrew from the motor shaft. There are 4 bolts that hold the pump assembly to the motor. Once those are removed then the motor assembly can be removed. Two small screws hold the front bearing to the front plate of the motor. Remove those and the motor shaft can be removed from back of the motor. Depending on the age of the motor you may have to remove two wires on the back of the motor shaft to remove it. With a small gear puller the bearing can be removed from the shaft. Using a 3/4" steel pipe the new bearing can be driven on the shaft. Reassemble the motor and pump in reverse order and the pump will be just fine. You might want to replace the seals when you have it apart. The cost for the new bearing is about $20.00.

RE: New Pump Question

Mike,

Thank you very much for taking the time to write the instructions. I will definitely pursue that route. Only question, the replacement parts. Should I contact MDM for the parts or do you know of a better place? Once again, thank you and yes I did all the stuff you wrote. I just left it out.

RE: New Pump Question

Mike,
The bearings are easy to get. Depending on the age of the pump will determine if both bearings are the same size or two different sizes. If you can look on the motor plate and give me the numbers next to AMP. There will be 4 sets of numbers. The first two sets are the amps that the motor uses at 110 and 220 volts at 50HZ. The second set is the amps at 115 and 230 volts at 60HZ. I am going to guess that the numbers will 3.4/1.7//2.6/1.3. If this is the case then it will take two SKF 6203 bearings. You can get either that brand or something that is the same. You should be able to get them locally or on the internet. Places like motion industries or bearing headquarters would be good local places.

RE: Bearing number

Mike,
I didn't give you all the numbers. The full number is 6203 2ZJEM. I looked on the internet with a goggle search and found them for $6.71. That was the first place there may be cheaper places.

Mike,
I found them on ebay for $3.98 each with free shipping.

Mike,

Here's the label.

Here is a link that might be useful: Baldor Motor Plate

RE: New Pump Question

Mike,

Yes that is a little different motor. It is a little newer then the ones that I usually change bearings. That motor plate states that it has 6203 bearings front and back. Sequence has changed their model numbers on that pump it is hard to keep up with them. The older Sequence 1000 4200's used a .25 hp motor which meant that it would pump 4200 gph at 12 ft of head. Then they changed to letters and numbers that didn't stand for anything. Then changed the numbering to the max flow the pump could produce. The last two numbers are the shutoff height.
