| I did do a search but didnt get the answers I needed. I have a fungus beginning on one of my 10+ yr old goldfish. It is smaller than pea size so it is just beginning. The tent is still on the pond and it's still in the low 30's at night so I have not been able to see them all closley for a good inspection. The all look pretty good from a distance but there looks to be a scale here and there that might be turning into something. I am pretty sure they got stressed when I first turned the pump on last week and it draind out over night, I took 3 days to fill it back up slowly.
The questions are. how much salt do I put in a 500 gal tank. How long do I leave it in there. Do I take the plants out. Do I run the pump or not? If so will this salt hurt all the birds that gather around? There are no ponding stores or Fish stores anywhere near here. Koivet will surley try to sell me some chemical product. I know there are experts in here that have dealt with this. HELP! |

| Lisa, I am certainly no expert and tend to over medicate when a problem arises so I won't comment on treatment however, I just went through an issue with one of my fish. I personally think the best way to treat the fish is to catch them and place them in a hospital tank / tub with an air pump going. It is much easier to treat medically and to see if your treatment is working. -Mike |

| I've always had horrible luck whenever I tried to isolate a sick aquarium fish. Seemed the stress of being caught and kept separate was worse than the original ailment. It may be that it's simply a few scales that got knocked out of place. I have had that happen and salt would be a good way to minimize bacterial issues. I don't know the salt ratio offhand but try googling it. Some site or blog will have it. I haven't had any problems in my pond, yet, but think I'd try melafix+pimafix if my pond was 500G and there was definitely fungus. Others seem to have success using those products. I think they can be used in conjunction with salt-but check with the manufacturers first. |
