Anyone grow the American lotus?

You'd think that one is the easiest to grow, since its native, but I've killed about 3 of them. I think I should give up. I don't know what the problem is.
I've done fine with the Egyptian lotus and Mrs. Perry D Slocum, but I just can't seem to keep the American one alive.

I grew some from seeds around two years ago and I believed that they formed tubers but it is hard to tell as my nephew's dog ate them when I unpacked them last year.

Yep but this year, there no dog, no nephew, and we are in a house of our own. Time to start more seeds!
