I just fished a koi from the big pond with the algae problem and transferred him to the little pond which is okay. He is dying, about a foot long and the top of him has a green mossy like covering. Should i try to remove it? I don't think he'll make it. We did a big water transfer today and I skimmed out the foamy stuff but things are not good.

If it is string algae just remove it or if it is fuzzy stuff growing on the fish it is fungus problem. Usually if the fish is that bad it will usually die. Check the other fish to see if they have it if the do a salt treatment will be needed. The foamy stuff will not hurt your fish it is just excess nutrients in the pond.

Lily316, Do not remove the growth on the fish. If it is algae it will not hurt the fish as the algae will only grow on dead tissue. When or if the the tissue grows back the algae will come off by itself. In the mean time it will help protect that area. You may also have a fungus growing under the algae or by itself. It is very possible that there is a bacteria infection going by itself or with these other problems. With your conditions I would say that you will probably loose this fish. About the only way you might be able to save this fish is to inject it with antibiotics and slowly warm the fish to 75 degrees. Also to treat the fish with proform-C. Then the fish needs to kept in perfect water. Basically intensive care for a fish. The average pond keeper isn't able to this. Mike |

Thanks Mike, I appreciate your advice and I AM the average pond keeper. I don't think either koi will make it and I have already lost two more a few weeks ago. We have too many inches of fish for gallons of water. We went to the local nursery and talked to the pond expert. She basically said my pond is crashing. Too many fish for the size of the pond since they got so large... We bought microbes to add to the filter and brought the two ailing koi to the small pond. She tested water from both ponds and said they basically tested okay. Temp is 44. I have two large tubs where we'll put salt and tomorrow net these two out and see what happens. It was a bad winter. She also said the foam may be caused by a dead something in the pond. Thanks again for your help.

Hi Lily316, The foam is dissolved organic compounds or DOC's. If you were my pond client I would suggest that you start doing some major water changes. I would suggest that 20% of the water in the pond be removed and fresh water put in. If it isn't possible to remove the water that is okay. Just put water in the pond and let it over flow until about 20% of the volume of the pond has been added. Do this three times in the first week and then once a week until the pond is warmed up and then you can go back to what you normally do. Make sure you use dechlor if necessary. Don't worry about the possible temperature difference. It is always a good idea to do water changes all winter long. Mike |

I used microbelift broad spectrum disease control this year and had none of the usual fungus outbreaks. It does contain malachite green and I have found that to work best in the past on infected fish. Good luck!

The big koi was transferred to a tub of salted water and died. The other sick koi is still in the small pond and moving around but he also has green fungus on his back. I feel so helpless. If my cats or dog got sick, they go to the vet , but I just sit here trying all sorts of things. These guys are like pets to me. Orangesicle is the one who died. We didn't do a water exchange in the big pond today, wanted to let the microbes work in the filter. We did a big one yesterday. Those fish look the same altho w/ the foam it's hard to say. To say I'm stressed about it is an understatement.

Check with your local vet. There may be a specialist in the area.

Sorry about your Koi. Hope things change for the better soon with all that you are doing.

Actually the dead koi isn't quite dead. he's still in a salt infused Rubbermade tub.. He is enormous..over 20 inches long and has this green algae or something on him. He's on his side like he has been. I feel so helpless. The other sick one is in the small pond at the bottom and isn't well either. The big pond hasn't changed.

Both koi died and are buried in the garden. The minute I see stress in any of the ones in the big pond (little pond fish are fine) what should I do before it's too late? Bring them to small pond, or put them in tubs?

Sorry about your koi. I lost all 4 of my koi this winter, so I know how you feel.

The "green mossy stuff" is called Saprolegnia, SAP for short. It's a secondary fungal infection. It grows on areas of the fish that are already damaged either from an injury or ulcer. Koi need a minimum of 500 gallons per fish of well filtered water. I'm sorry about your fish.
