Needed information on a cage for a pump

We purchased a home with a very large pond. It is two levels, slightly more than 10,000 gallons. We have a fairly sizable pump to move the water from the bottom pond to the top pond. We have frogs, toads and plants, no fish. We want to keep the frogs and toads however the tadpoles are sucked into the pump. From the research I have done it appears that we need a cage for the pump. I cannot find any information on where to buy one or how to build one, if anyone can give me any instruction or guidence or hook me up with a link it would be great.

what I did was buy a black end cap at lowes used with the corrigated french drain pipe black plastic pipe about 4" it has slits cut in it to collect water in the french drain ditch.. anyway my pump has a threaded inlet. I found a plumbing part that threads inot the pump I cut a hole in the end cap same size as fitting and mount the end cap cup away from pump. then take 5 inches or so of the black pipe and insert into the end cap mounted to the pump. fill the pipe with folded up 1/2 inch prefilter I also cut out a round same size as pipe black coarse filter media and green pad and put that at the end and the end result it is a pre filter and diverts int inlet flow through the slits in the black pipe as well as the open end filled with the pad.. I did forget to mention at the last ring of the black pipe closest to the pump set about an inch off the inlet of the pump and your plumbing fitting to the pump I cut a rigid piece of plastic in my case an old baby gate that has the plastic grating in it so the filter media does not get sucked into the pipe.. hard to explain if you want a pic let me know.. will make you one if you want to trade some tadpoles

My big submersible pump (4200 gph) is housed in a "cage" made from 2 waterlily baskets from lowes. The ones with all the little holes - I finally found a use for them! they are about a foot across the top and maybe a foot tall. I cut a hole for the 3" tubing to come out, a place for the cord to come through and close with zip ties. All filter material is at the discharge end - none in the baskets. It never cloged all last year. I put it together in 2008, never opened it last year and it is running now. Has been in the pond all that time. I shut it down for the winter. I'm thinking I should take it out and check it...

The holes are litte enough that the tadpoles didn't go through and the baskets big enough that none were held against it by the suction.

We use a black plastic basket for growing waterlilies too. It has blue plastic mesh stuff in it. Can't remember what the mesh stuff really is but it is from Home Depot and comes in a sheet. DH cut it to fit easily. We use this as a prefilter to the pump. It is actually our only filter.....
