Hardy Water Lilies for South Florida

Posted by palmfan z7NJ (My Page) on

I have a brother who is moving from Michigan to south Florida. Are there any hardy waterlilies that will survive/thrive in Florida? I think he wants to try Nymphaea odorata and Helvola ( yellow Pygmy). Thanks in advance for any feedback Florida residents may be able to provide. I DO realize that there are a host of lovely tropicals for him to choose, as well.

All hardy water lilies will survive in florida. Tropicals however are the best because of the colors and fragrance of the flower hardies generally do not have a fragrance. Tropicals lilies in the north are usually treated as an annual. So he has open range on what ever he wants.

Hi
Have never grown any of the hardies .Just too many tropicals to choose from. Of course I'm partial to blue and deep purples and night flowers.. Also a whole group of gingers ,palms and aroids that can be grown here.
Will need a VERY large pond lol.
This year was tough due to the continuous cold but all will survive but no winter flowers at least not this year. gary

Thanks Greg and Gary for your input. I will pass this on to my brother who will be Florida bound in a couple of weeks. I know he plans to put in a fairly large liner pond. I envy his available choice of palms, gingers, and waterlilies!

Hi
Due to the on going "Ice age" this winter has been particularly tough . Don't think I've lost any plants but several were nipped down to water level. Hopefully they will recover.
Did wipe out all the tropical fish in all 3 ponds. Two of these ponds I've run since 1982.
