Struggling Comet :(

Hello, the other night I put the hose in my pond and went in the house with the intention of setting a timer and totally forgot. In the morning I went into the yard to let the dogs out and saw the hose and promptly said some things that would make a sailor blush. I had left the hose running all night long. I ran and turned off the hose and then located my bottle of de-chlorinator and put that in. Everyone was struggling and overall I lost some beautiful comets and one black moor that I had been doting over for a couple of years. It was heart breaking. Slowly, my other comets and my two big koi have recovered. The incident happened two evenings ago and last night the ones that seemed okay didn't seem to want to eat, but now they are fine.

My main question is that I still have one large comet that is still ticking but having a rough go. He is lying near the water fall with his little mouth above surface. He isn't swimming but laying on his side. I have hope that he too will recover, since he's held on this long, but, I don't want to have him suffer if that is not the case. Has anyone had a fish in this condition do a turn around? I appreciate any support I can receive on this forum. Good evenin'

Jackie

Hi
Bet there isn't a ponder in the world who hasn't done that at some time or the other. I know I have . There is a simple and cheap solution. They make a spring loaded valve that attaches to the spigot then the hose attaches to it. Shuts the water off automaticly by time. You can also get electric ones that turn on and off by time but of course cost more and need electricity or battery.
Hard to say if the fish will survive or not about all you can do is wait and see what happens. The dechlor will help for sure Carp are pretty tough fish!! Good luck gary

He'll be dead in a day or so. Sorry Jackie. I killed all my Koi, and goldfish last spring the same way. Terrible feeling.

The largest Koi I had was over 18" long. It was a total disaster.

RE: Struggling Comet :(

I'm sorry you lost all of your fish groundbeef, just losing six had me very sad, especially since it was all of my own fault. However, the good news is when I got home from work today the large comet that was struggling was swimming as if nothing had happened, well, almost, he is a little sluggish but still doing much better. The others, 2 large koi and about 5 comet were 'off their feed yesterday' but everyone was hungry this evening, even the one I had my doubts about.

I would use my time in the winter, but as I said earlier, it is disconnected for the winter. In the summer, my pond is topped off for about 15 minutes twice a day with a 1/4" hose that is connected to my drip irrigation system. I did this all of last summer without any problems at all. It works very well to do that this way. Anyway, I hope to never make this mistake again. Happy Ponding '12 everyone!
