adding bacteria

I have started my waterfall up and have the water circulating. Pond opened clear with some hair algae around the edges and such.
My question is At what point can I put in my sludge reducer and my barely and peat extract? My water temp is roughly 40-50*. I have not checked it this week to get the actual temp. Is there a certain temp. that you need to wait for before you starte adding the bacteria? I use Tetra Pond Barely and Peat and then Tetra Pond Sludge Reducer. If you have any idea on this please let me know.

Hey, Troy. Bacteria doesn't usually become active until the temps are around 50-55 degrees.

Troy & Sleepless,

I went to our local pond store today and saw a couple of new all-temp products from reputable companies.

One was "All-In-One," sorry, can't recall the manufacturer; and, another was "OneFix" by Crystal Clear. They supposedly work even below the usual 55 degree threshold.

The Crystal Clear website didn't have any Data Sheet for this product posted yet... I guess it is very new, according to my knowledgeable friend at the pond store.

I know that drh1, our regular contributor here on GardenWeb, doesn't feel you need to add beneficial bacteria since there is bacteria naturally developing. I add though, usually before my plants have a chance to get going, just so the string algae has something to compete against... I don't know if that makes good sense or financial sense, but I do it.

I'm trying the OneFix now.

Here is a link that might be useful: OneFix by Crystal Clear (no data sheet posted yet)
