| I am starting a small pond in my backyard and need ideas for what kind of filter I should buy or make. It is a 50gallon with goldfish and aquatic plants.
Thanks! |

| I've recently stumbled upon this page (see link below). A real nice write-up & diagrams / photos of what you can do. Often referred to as "a Skippy." A 50 gal pond is a lot smaller than I'm used to but I'm sure there will be others over here who can help. |

| I have two ponds side by side (with a bridge over the land between so it looks like 1 huge pond). In the larger 180 gal pond I have the larger Pondmaster filter, not sure what size pump it has but it is a replacement upgrade anyway. The pump sits nest to the filter (I made a bracket to join them together). While I have to rinse the filter 2-3 times a week it works very well. The filter has a cheap batting filler that I toss when it gets bad. My smaller 80 gallon pond has never had a filter I was happy with. My first was too small, next was too big. This year I'm going to get a smaller Pondmaster filter, the one that hold the pump inside the filter basket. The filter helps get floating gook out, but it's main tasks are to move water to get air into the water with a spray head, and to hold the bacteria that eats most of your fish waste. Together bacteria and some plants (I toss in some floating lettuce plants) take care of all my fish wastes, plus the plants steal sunlight from algae so I don't get that so bad. |
