New Pond Oxygenation Question...

Hi All!

Our 10-year-old 245 gallon pre-form got a leak, so we replaced it with a 145 gallon (in photo above) and moved it nearer the house (arthritis strikes!)... :-)

The old pond had both the skippy filter running off a 415gph pump (skippy shown in photo) - plus, a bubbler attached to a box filter with 415gph pump. That set-up kept the water absolutely beautiful all these years!

Since this new pond is half the size, do you think that the skippy/waterfall will be enough oxygenation for the 6 fish? Or should I add back the bubbler, too? There's not as much 'floor' space in the new pond...

Hope to add a couple more plants, as well...

I would add the bubbler. The more oxygen in the water the better. It doesn't look like there is much turbulence which is what oxygenates the water from the waterfall. Besides that, the pond is sort of small for 6 fish especially as they grow so more oxygen would be needed.

RE: New Pond Oxygenation Question...

Thanks - that's what I've been worrying about - not enough turbulence... :-)

The fish have not gotten any bigger than they currently are over the past 10 years - one is an 'original' of the first dozen 'feeder' fish that I put in the bigger pond - the 5 others are offspring from the first year or so of breeding...

All the 'original' fish met with bird predation, except one and the offspring. I think we now have all female - or all male fish - because there have been no babies in the last 8 years...

The other pond had so much good algae and plant roots to nibble on that the fish showed little interest in commercial fish food. I hope to get the new pond to that state where there is natural food for them to eat...

I have wondered why they have not gotten bigger, but they are very healthy and lively - so maybe it's OK...? Somewhere I read that they can conform to the size of their surroundings - anyone else noticed this phenomenon...? :-)

Goldfish will grow to "fit" their pond. Koi will just keep on growing though can be stunted if their pond is too small.
