repairing my pond

I have a pond that over the harsh winter in NY was destroyed. a large amount a snow fell off the roof of my house and collapsed the waterfall and one side of my pond luckily i checked shortly after the incident and saved my fish from a disaster but now i must rebuild my pond as the weather is getting nicer. there is very little dirt and mostly sand in my yard so i was wondering if i could build a pond out of sturdy material to put under the ground to act as a foundation and walls of my pond to then place the liner over. my first idea was wood but of course it will decay over time and possible invite termites into my house. so i am looking for a new idea. i am open to any ideas from anyone and i appreciate your help.
thanks,
Nick

Nick,

Sorry you had the problems this winter. Nothing like trying to save fish in the cold winter with a collapsing pond going on.

I don't really understand why you want to have a foundation under the ground unless the dirt/sand collapses before you can get the liner in and the water in the pond. Once the water is in the pond, I would think the sides would be stabalized by the water pressure.

That said, if I wanted to have an under-ground foundation I'd use cement blocks or even pour cement walls. I think you are right that wood could be a problem.

Good luck. I'm a northern New Yorker too.

I used cinder block, rebar and concrete.

I think if you just make sure that you have a sturdy collar such as a ring of cement blocks or concrete your pond will sturdy enough. You will also need to make sure that your pond water level is never lower then the gound water level in times of flooding.

Lisa
