| I have a relatively small pond that has been active for about 7-8 years now; six comets of the same age. Capacity is about 80 gallons, the pond is circular and about 3 feet deep. The fish winter well in the pond - I turn the pump off when it gets below 40 degrees and make sure that is doesn't freeze over.
I replaced my pump this year, and am considering building a Adam's filter. i had been using large black sponge filters, but the filter companies seem to be getting away from them, and i notice that the tend to begin to deteriorate etc. I have two questions about the Adams filter. I do run a fountain extension off my pump to the surface, so that is one difference from the pictures. 1) I keep wondering if pumps don't over heat enclosed in the box, but keep reminding myself that internally the environment should be about the same temperature as the water, so this may just be over-thinking. 2) I keep thinking that water should flow more 'through' the pump. My understanding is that holes are mostly made on the top of the container, where water would flow in and flow out. Has anyone else made an Adam's filter and experimented with holes from side to side, in addition to the holes in the top? Thank you! |

| origen, the problem with the Adam's filter is that it employs the use of lava rock, which is very difficult to clean after it becomes plugged with pond gunk. If would like to see some other ideas, check the link below for three of different pre-fiter types using pot scrubbies, which are easier to clean. |
