Thanks for posting. Your method sounds easier than mine. I boiled water and used sterile jars. I changed the water twice a day. I used clay cat litter and compost and fresh horse manure. I got them as far as aerial leaves and them it got late in the season. I stored about eight of the tuber's in my pond for winter. I will pot them as soon as weather gets warmer. What I was wondering is what kind of blooms will I get from the seeds grown from the dried floral pods from H Lobby.Photobucket

RE: yay lotus!!!

Well i have been pretty much going by what the internet tells me lol. But i just ran well water from my kitchen sink a couple times a day. In a cereal bowl. All 4 that i planted have the leaf roll sticking out of the water about an inch but havent uncurled yet. I bought my seeds from a dried arrangement at the hobby lobby so i have absolutely no idea what to expect as far as color or type. A couple of the pods were HUGE and some were small with unripe seeds. I guess it will be a surprise! Haha. When did you start your seeds cause yours have quite a few floating leaves!

RE: yay lotus!!!

Y'all have me thinking of trying to grow these from seed again. I had so much fun and ended up with so many lotus last time I did this.

"What I was wondering is what kind of blooms will I get from the seeds grown from the dried floral pods from H Lobby"

When I grew them years ago, I got yellow. I'm almost positive they were American lotus, the wild one. It makes sense since large stands of them would be needed to collect enough pods to make any kind of money selling them, and the only lotus I know of in this country that are in that large of populations are the wild ones. Maybe there's an aquatic plant grower somewhere who has that large of a stand of a cultivar of another type, so I guess it's possible they could be another color, but imho it's doubtful.

Knittlin, since mine were from hobby lobby as well Im just guessing the blooms will be yellow as well since those kind of lotus are more common they will be gorgeous either way. (if they bloom at all) plus my little girls favorite color seems to be yellow so that would be cool:)

I think they're gorgeous, too, ChubbyPopTart. Some of those pink doubles are really pretty, but I like the yellow just as well myself, and in some ways more.

I don't think the scum on the top of your pots will hurt anything, so long as the leaves are getting enough sun. I wouldn't worry about it too much. Keep skimming if you want to, if it's really thick. But best I remember, mine did that too, I didn't skim and they were fine.

BTW, I have three lotus seed pods sitting on my table next to the computer as I type this. Y'all have inspired me. ;)

RE: yay lotus!!!

I think your water needs changed. Quickly. I have had the best luck avoiding the scummy water by adding a cup of Hydrogen peroxide to the soaking water. Those seed shells pick up all sorts of dirt, especially in the hobby stores. I suspect at least one of your seeds has gone bad even if you do see some green. If the seed feels soft when you squeeze it, it has rotted inside.

Sorry knittlin *mommy brain* i just realized you were qouting me and not asking the same question haha. Thanks for the advice guys. I think i will keep skimming just to appease myself. I wanna keep them in as natural environment as possible.

RE: yay lotus!!!

I always start out with alot of algae in my un-filtered containers/stocktanks, and it clears up on its own. If its string algae, I'll sometimes pull it out if there's alot of it, but I usually don't worry about it. The larger the plant gets, the clearer the water gets.
