inbreeding in goldfish

Should I try to buy a new male goldfish so I have some diversity. My goldfish are related to my original 4 big fish. Is inbreeding a problem with goldfish? Also none of my baby fish are fantails. Do the fantails cross with shebumpkins?

Fantails, shibunkins, comets, and sarassas are all types of goldfish. That means that they will cross breed. Koi can also cross breed with goldfish but the offspring are sterile. Inbreeding is not a problem with goldfish.

Hi
I originally got two pair of red wag swordtails in. 1982, which mutiplied into several thousand over the years. Found it interesting that even if there was 3 months between generations that is still 81 generations all directly related.!! .Though other colors showed up over the years the majority were still red wag swords.
Seems surprizing to me as this color variety was originally produced by crossing a red platy with a green swordtail. Which are still listed as two different species .lol
never seen any degeneration caused by imbreeding!!.
All history now as this freaky winter wiped them out
due to cold. Not one survivor. gary

I am so sorry about your fish. I am sad when one of mine dies, but I have only had them a couple years.

Our pond is about 1300 gallons. We started it with 12 $0.25 feeder fish. The first year we lost 8. The next spring we had may be a thousand? (a lot). By the end of the first summer we had about 100 of 2 to 3" goldfish. After about 5 years the population has stabilized to about 60. The originals are about 10 inches long now.

Hi,

I live in San Ramon Contra Costa county, CA. Do you think it would be a good idea to put in a few platies or mollies in my 700 gallon pond?

Hi
As I mentioned I've kept platies and swords since 1982 but were completely wiped out this year for the first time lol. They can survive temps down into the low 40's for short periods But 32 is fatal .
What you can do is keep them over summer and bring a few pairs into the house when fall arrives.
Except for cold they are extremely hardy fish.
Mollies should be a bit more cold tolerant but probably depends on the species most hybrid fish are far more delicate than the wild forms .
Good luck finding wild forms of any of the live bearers!! lol gary

I too, can sometimes winter the platies and swordtails out side. The guppies and mollies cannot take the cold and I've never had a winter survivor. My red wag swords sometimes revert back to a yellowish with a green and black stripe.

Hi
My understanding of the "Redwag Swordtail" is that it was a cross between a Green sword(Helleri) and a red form
of a Platy (maculatus) Would think if this were true they would revert to wild form within at most 4 generations lol.
These are still actually listed as two SPECIES.
Over the years have had many colors as well as sword forms but the majority were still RED WAGS Any thoughts on that?? Would seem they are defying Mendels laws??
My original goal was to breed the RW into what is known as a RED JET front half red back half black. Got spotted ,stripe solid red solid yellow ,never a solid black or solid green(wild color) Also got both yellow swords as well as solid black and platy form with no sword at all.
This obviously can't be done in a pond as you need absolute control over who the parents are.
I have a bit of experience with Goldfish but not successive generations but suspect they have been inbred for hundreds of years?? My guess from my experience with swords that inbreeding is not harmful at all .??
Sorry didn't meant to hijack your thread!!!! gary
