I have a small pond (500 gal) and I had 3 water lilies. Someone gave me 4 more. Is that too many? My pond is in full sun and I need the shade. I tried putting water hyacinths in last year for shade but my dog likes to eat them or at least pull them out of the pond and play with them. (never when I'm around of course) What do you think?

Yeah, that's probably too many if they aren't the smaller types. Surface area is probably as important as gals., but in your case you should want to have the depth that can support them well (24" or more).

Hi Know to what family they belong?? WL range from those with 3 inch pads with a foot spread to those with 7/8 foot pads with 50 foot spreads. If hardy types .probably somewhere in between?? You could go ahead and grow them for sure but suspect they would get WAAAYYYY overcrowded. I find lilies to be incredibly adaptable but then I only keep the tropicals. gary
