stock tank pond - fish advice

I have a 140 gallon galvanized metal stock tank that has been a "pond" for about a year. The water lily is doing well, as is another plant from the pond store. This spring, I added a feeder goldfish who seemed to be doing just fine until I came home from work one day to find him on the ground outside of the tank. He was not damaged, so I wouldn't think that a bird got him. Do you think he might have jumped out of the tank? If that's the case, would this be an indication that the water quality is not good? The water is pretty clear. I don't have a filter, but there is a solar-powered aerator and a spitter.
