dry pond vs. algae .... kill?

I have just emptied my pond & flushed it with clean water & vac-ed it out. If I let the pond (in-ground freeform)dry out for a couple of days will that kill the green algae sticking to the sides? I don't want to get down in the pond & scrape the sides as I'm afraid to crack the bottom but I want to start out with a clean pond. Last year it was pretty much algae free to my amazement and the only thing I can think of is I had mint growing among the dozens of scrubby pads in the skippy filter. I have the pads rinsing out a bit in a tub of water now & some more mint growing to put in with the pads in the skippy.

I wondered if the dry pond & sunshine would kill the algae still on the sides?

The algae growing on the sides of liner I'm told you want.

Hi Vieja. Algae along the sides is very important to the health of your pond in that it helps to filter the water and the fish can feed off of it. Algae is high in Vitamin C and acts as a natural colour enhancer.

doubtful. Algea will go into a dormant state and rehydrate after you fill it back up. It would have to stay dry for a long time to be effective.

Either way leave it. A little wont hurt a thing.

Thanks! During the winter when the pond was FULL of that string algae ... covering everything!.. I did notice the big goldies would go over & grab & pull off a mouthful & eat it. Now the plants & containers are covered with it also & much as I've tried to pull it off there is a lot clinging on that will have to go back in the pond on the plant containers. Is that green algae on the sides the same as the string algae? Last Spring I actually got down in the dry pond & scraped the sides off of the green stuff but SO glad to hear I shouldn't do that this year ... oh, my aching back & knees last year! What an exercise though trying to net the goldies & the mosquito eating minnows once the junk on the bottom got stirred up & they could hide. This was after I bucketed up pail after pail of water & poured it through netting to capture those elusive minnows that I wanted to keep & corraled them in a garbage can of water to hold them all! BTW, I poured those buckets of yucky pond water in my flower beds thinking it must be good for something?

The stuff on the sides is OK. BUT any of the string algae I would get rid of. It just causes problem. Clogs filters and pumps etc.

Good luck!

Matt
