| Hi everyone!
I'm a newbie here. I had a pre-formed small pond when I lived in Iowa. I've since moved to NC, and am building a new, bigger pond. We've been digging here and there for the last few months. I'll have one main pond around 4500-5,000 gallons, with a 500 or so gallon bog. My plan is to pump water through a submersible pump to the bog, which is about a foot above the pond level. There will then be a one foot drop from the bog back into the pond. May use the pump for an emitter in the middle too, but that may be later. Pond depth is about 2.5 feet where the pump will pull from, and there's about a 7 foot run over to the bog. Should I be looking at a 5,000 GPH minimum pump? Any particular recommendations? I'm looking to spend as little as possible for a quality pump, but willing to pay more for quality if its going to last longer. Energy-efficiency is a must. Any particular pumps and/or brands you would recommend would be appreciated! --Samantha |

| Samantha Why a submersible? With a pond that size a bottom drain is a must! I would use a Sequence or other non-submersible pump with a bottom drain. The enenery effiency is much better on these pumps too. Bottom drains keep the pond cleaner. |

| i would go with a external pump.much more energy efficient.a submersible pump grinds the waste up then sends it to the filters.you would be better off with a settling chamber before the pump,to trap the heavys before the pump.a real good pump is the performance pro artesian.the 1/4 hp.will pump 4900 gal/hr up 9 1/2 ft. before loosing any pressure.it uses about 300 watts. |

| I hadn't even though of an external pump - thanks! We are planning a bottom drain, but with a direct pump-out. The plan is to vac or sump out through the bottom drain as needed into the flower beds. Year one and two for the pond we are planning on try to use only the bog filter that then empties into the pond, and determine if we need more filtration based on how the pond performs over the initial years. With an external pump, could I sink it next to the bog to pull from the pond and into the bog? Thanks for your help. There are so many components to ponds that it can get overwhelming at times! |

| My external pump is hooked into my bottom drain. So it pulls from the bottom and pulls all the dirt and mulm from the bottom of the pond. It needs to be plumbed before you get the pond in, not after. Matt |

| i have three bottom drains that feed into a three stage settling/filter.that was built with plywood and lined with pond liner.the first stage is settling, flows over to course pads, then under and up to finer pads, than into the pump, then to the bio/waterfall filters.i feed the three stage filter with 4 in. pipe.i do my weekly water changes from the bottom of the settling chamber. |
