we want to enlarge our pond and would have to make the hose from the skimmer longer is there any way to do this that doesn't require me to buy a whole new skimmer and kit? If we just attach another piece onto the hose will it leak?

RE: enlarging the pond questions

There is a plumbing fixture that I used to join two different kinds (but same size) of hose. Sorry, but I don't know what it is called, either a hose couple or a hose mender. This one has a handle that I can restrict the flow of water, but I've never used that. I like all the flow I can get. They also had ones without that feature.

Just to be safe (I am always into over-kill) I used a metal band clamp to BE SURE it held. hahaha Hasn't come loose yet.

I just took the two pieces of hose into the hardware store and asked how to hook them together.

They are used to me coming in with weird requests for my crafts. I get an idea and then go find a sympathetic clerk and tell them what's in my head and, son of a gun, they always have an answer that works - not always what I expected, but it works. I find that an Ace Hardware store usually has clerks who are most willing to help. Of course, they may cringe when I walk through the door, but they are nice to me. :-)

I think Pashta is refering to Fernco fittings. Flexibe rubber hose connectors that connect PVC and ABS together. I absolutely love them.

If you have flexible hose then you can buy barbed hose connectors called "coupling". There are many on-line sources.

You can use the Fernco fittings mentioned above or you can use a PVC coupler to join 2 pieces of tubing. With PVC, use a blue Oatley brand "Rain or Shine" cement.

If it is a permanent connection I prefer to use a coupler and cement. If it is connected to a pump, etc. and will need to be disconnected at any time, I prefer a Fernco fitting.

All of the above can be found at a hardware store in the plumbing dept. or at the big box stores.
