| I'm sure this has been asked before, but I didn't want to search for extended period of time. Do you know of any common aquarium fish that can be safely placed in the garden pond? I have had numerous aquarium fish, some of which have been coldwater specimens (not just goldfish). It would perhaps not be too difficult to research the coldwater aquarium fish, but I'm just wondering if any of you have had success putting the store-variety aquarium fish in your garden pond? I'm tempted to throw in a few, while I'm down with a cold and unable to get in to purchase water plants for my new pond. The pond has sat there full of water and completely empty of all but waterbugs all winter!

Hi You certainly can over summer. most will not tolerate temps below 40. I've kept platies ,guppies, swords several types of tetras and chichlids .Except for platies and swords most don't make good pond fish because of the small size and dull coloration when looking down on them. All the live bearers will multiple to a gazillion or so over summer so you can over winter a few pairs in the house. gary

I can see that you're in Florida, which is, I believe, semitropical? It may be different here in the Pacific NW, where things get considerably colder. I should think some coldwater fish would be better, like, for example, paradise fish? I have personally kept the White Cloud Mountain Minnow which, I believe, can handle cold temps. And I scooped up some baby catsfish out of a local lake and kept it in my aquarium for awhile, until they got bigger, when I returned them back to the wild. Thanks for your response... Randy

Randy, here in CA I have kept Chinese Weather Loaches and Albino Catfish successfully over winter. The catfish, bought as a tiny dude, hid from us until he was ten inches long, believe it or not, even though he was ivory colored! Once he got to ten inches, he was so hungry he finally came to the surface to feed with the goldfish. We called him Lazarus at first, since it seemed he had returned from the dead, but Hoover fit him better, so Hoover it is. He now lives at the golf course pond, where he occasionally scares the small children. Renee

I also have a albino catfish that is about 8 inches long. He went into the pond last summer. He gets along well right now with the others. I have trained him to eat from my fingers. It has become easier to take his picture since he started coming up when he sees me. Allow me to introduce Albert:

Albert must be Hoover's brother! What a gorgeous fish. I love your pond, hardin.

Thanks, I appreciate that. I don't know what I'm going to do when Al gets too big. I have it in my mind to build another pond some day just for him. I've gotten kinda attached to him, just like I did with my goldies and my one and only koi.

Lovely pictures! I'm going to have to learn how to post my own pictures. Gorgeous! Randy

Randy VErY heavy on the SEMI tropical this year!! lol Not sure what happened as it's been colder in the past down to 27 whille the low this year was 28 but we set 5 records on daytime highs . 4 consecutive days below 42 . Old record was 48 but only for 8 hours. Normally I've always brought a few pairs into the house "Just in case" but didn't this year. have had die offs but never complete wipe outs. Generally most "Aquarium fish " are not good pond fish for several reasons besides cold. White clouds are so small they'd be lost in a pond lol You might google "Cold water pond fish"or "Cold water Aquarium fish"?? gary

Yes, minnows are out. Some aquarium fish I thought might grow larger outside of the smaller aquarium environment. I think I'll probably have to stay with the mainstays. As for Florida weather, yes I've noticed! I have a friend who moved all the way there a few years ago from up here in the Pacific NW. He doesn't get all of the hurricanes that often hit the coast, but I'm sure he got some of the freezing weather. Strange year! Here in the Pacific NW things were very mild this winter, as opposed to last winter. But our Spring is very slow in coming....

Hi Well the only thing that was wiped out was the fish . Severall plants are still kind up in the air. Lost no orchids or palms A neighbor lost 5 30 year old Coconut palms while a neighbor on the otherside were only slightly damaged. Can't wait for the hurricane season !!! "Above normal with greater intensity and more likely to strike the continent." Oh well so far no tsunamis volcanos, earthquakes .lol Good luck with your fish search!!! gary
