How much do rocks weigh?

Posted by frogged 6a (My Page) on

Looking to buy several large stones/rocks. Say three to five feet in circumference. When I was looking at web sites they listed thier prices in lb which made me wonder how much would a rock like this weigh? I know different types of stones likely have different densities. Does any one have a guestimate cause I have no idea.... Thanks!

Rocks weigh alot more than you would think. For a rock 3 to 5 feet around, depending on how high it was, probably would take four men to pick up.
A funny example: A couple of years ago a few women from town and this farm girl were cleaning up small rocks/stones in a new horse arena. The others loaded a wheelbarrow while I raked into piles in another area. They heaped the wheelbarrow up and then tried to push it in the sand. It immediately fell over and dumped the rocks out. LOL!

We have huge rocks of sandstone outside the pond.My husband used the tractor's front end loader to move them.
I agree it depends on the density of the stone. Sandstone is lighter than granite. etc.
Here is a small portion of our pond showing some of the smaller rocks.

Granite will weigh about 180 lbs per cubic foot. So a 3 ft in diameter round granite rock will weigh about 1 ton.

Using the Search feature in the top right corner and typing in "ROCKs" might be of help, esp. if you are looking to buy some (so to get some Ideas).

I'm going to guess and say that rock, when dense, is close to the weight of concrete; Concrete weighs around 140 lbs / cubic ft., so a little less than that is probably where you're at.

Most garden or rock yards that deal in large rocks and boulders will expect to have to deliver (you might pay a delivery charge), but they usually have a wheeled loader, like a forklift, moffitt forklift, or a piggyback lift. If you pay them to get it to your neighborhood, they can probably place if for you if you have clear access for them.

Hey thanks!, this is a great help. This gives me a much better idea of the cost. Im really hoping to expand my pond this year, and having some larger rocks will of course be needed to make things look right. Thanks again :0)

RE: How much do rocks weigh?

When I ordered rocks for my pond construction, there was one type of rock that I couldn't tag because the quarry didn't have any cut and palleted. I wanted a flat stone, like flagstone, but when it arrived, it was very large (5 x 8 x 2' -ish) and weighed much more than I could move. My neighbor and I ended up using the ancient Egyptian method- 4 logs under the end of the rock when it was lifted with a metal pole, then the logs were moved into place as the rock was rolled into position (luckily, they weren't moving very far- no more than 6 feet, as I decided to line the top of the stream with them).
