| Hi. When I feed my fish, a strong current quickly draws the food into my skimmer. Last year I found a nice styrofoam ring that I tethered to the shore but that was only partly successful. The ring was so light that when the fish came up to feed they usually lifted the ring and much of the food was drawn to the skimmer.
I would like to hear what others use if they need a feeding area, or any ideas that might work. I need something that floats but is heavy enough that the fish can't disturb it but won't hurt themselves when they attack their meal. It should be tethered to shore rather than having anchor lines to tangle with the fish. I am getting ready to install the pumps and hope for a solution soon. Thanks for your thoughts.

Hey there Mike. I used a hula hoop but they could lift it or swim over it easily. It quickly became a game. Your best bet is to turn off the skimmer when feeding.

70% of the time I turn off the skimmer when feeding. The other times (when I'm in a hurry), I just toss it from my deck to the slowest moving water and they seem to get it before it reaches the skimmer. I also have a netted blocking to the skimmer intake, so if they miss some they will go check there for extra!

i took some garden edging, the stuff that is 6 in. wide.formed a circle and joined it together.and caulked the seams water tight.turned it up side down.keeps most of the food in.

I agree that turning off the skimmer is sensible but I don't think it is a good choice for me. My stream system is quite large as is my settlement pond. Many hundreds of gallons moving around in that area. When I turn off the skimmer pump all that water back drains to the pond and into the overflow system. When I start up again I have to add all that water again--expensive and wasteful maybe. Or am I missing something in the advice about the skimmer? I think I will need to fabricate something as Joe did with his garden edging. Ideas in that vein will be valuable for me. I know there are lots of good and creative minds on the Forum and hope some will help me find the answer.
