Would a styrofoam wreath ring work for a floating planter?

| I've been spinning the wheels in my head trying to make a homemade floating planter for the pond. I'm thinking a styrofoam wreath ring would work. I would wrap plastic ivy around the foam to hide the white styro, and then fit a planter down into the middle. Might this work?...or do you think the styro would eventually become waterlogged and sink? Any other ideas for a floater? |

| There are green dense foam rings that are used for wreaths that I have used before. They are much more durable than the white foam ones. One thing I did was to sew the cocoa wire basket liners into the rings and put the pond planting material in there for roots to anchor in. You could also use pea gravel I guess. Here's a picture of what it looked like - it's in the black 40 gal stock tank. It doesn't have anything growing yet because I'd just planted watercress seeds in there:
I have also thought of finding a plastic pot that fits the foam and making holes around the edges of the pot and zip tying it to the foam. Something else I did that worked very well was to use a dark green kneeling pad that is used in gardening; I cut it in a circle, poked holes in it and then pushed bare-root plants into the holes so the roots stuck down through the foam into the water. I tried it with both ajuna and hosta. Both worked well. The ajuna even survived the winter under the snow just sitting on the ground. I was shocked it was still alive in the spring. Anne |

| Do a search (if you haven't already) of floating islands or planters on this site - there are several novel ideas. a lot depends on how much sweat equity you are willing to do. My concern with painted plastic items is the paint coming off into the water and posioning fish - especially, since most everything we buy is from China - Enough said?? |

| I just bought a small floating planter from Lowe's for about $6. It was black. The check-out lady said "That looks like the flower thing they sell at the dollar store." So I went to Dollar Tree and bought the same sized green foam thing for $1 and put a small pot in it. works great. Although I haven't covered up the foam with anything. |

| Get a coir lined round planting basket. Tie a pool noodle around the edges. Cover the pool noodle with black fabric. |

| I've made rings using the black foam pipe insulation. You can use cable ties to secure the ends or run a cord in the slit meant for pipes and tie those ends together. |
