External filter

I am new to ponding. Looking for advice and suggestions. I am looking for an excellent external filter (not pressurized). I have a 2400 gph pump but I believe by the time the water gets to the filter, the flow might be around 1800 to 2000 gph.

Please let me know if any additional info is needed.

Thanks,

AGE

Google "skippy pond filter" and see if that is something you might be interested in. A lot of people have used them with excellent results. Cheap and easy to make.

I saw the "skippy filter" on several sites but I was wondering if there is something of the shelf that I could buy

RE: External filter

I would buy a liner and make my own fiter before buying one. All you need is a shape that holds water and that can be most anything (think wood, blocks, cement, plastic) a intake pipe and an outake pipe that is roughly at least 2.5 times bigger then the intake (such as intake is 1 inch, then outake is about 3 inches or two 1.5 inch pipes to waterfall. Google and use pipe boot to get the plumbing of the pipes thru the liner (very inexpensive). Fill with washable furnace filter, kitchen scrubbies, savio springflo, ect. Then add plants such as watercress or floating planters with just about any water loving plant to suck out nitrates.

When you want to get fancy fit the filter with a drain and valve, and an overflow.....

This is a cheaper way, a more fun way to get an external filter that will suit your needs.

lisa

Age, Lisa is giving good advice.
You get a bigger bang for your buck by doing it yourself and making your own filtering system.

Lisa suggested the idea of using EPDM liner and a support frame, you could also consider using large tote boxes or used plastic barrels.

Any suggestion on design. I have access to large tubs and even 55 gallon plastic drum

Age, below is a link to a list of home made filter ideas.
It was originally put together some time ago by Mike Bentley.
Unfortunately some of the sites are no longer viable, but there are still some live sites, with information on home made filters etc.
I'll take a look around and see if I have some more links for you.
