Caught a pic of these guys laying on the top of my little water fall this morning. One of them is getting close to shedding its skin I think. Hopefully it will be used by a bird for some of its nest! I just love recycling!
Any snake experts out there?..........is the big one the male and the 2 smaller ones female? Do they mate with their offspring?
Still saw at least one big tadpole in the pond, so they haven't eaten them all yet. Also heard a green frog this morning, and warned him/her to be on the look-out.

Oh, I think we have a snake fancier on the forum. Catherine that is a great picture.

I think you are seeing a momma and two youngins from the same hatch. Or do water snakes bear live young? Obviously there are no hostilities going on.

It is really hard to sex snakes. You need a probe or you have to kind of squeeze them down low which could really hurt them if not done right.

Those look like Northern water snakes. Kind of a drab brown out of water but their pattern is more distinct in water. They are very unfriendly if you try to catch them with an enzyme in their saliva that is a very mild anticoagulant. I have been bit by them while handling them and it is really not that big of a deal. They prefer to slither away and you really have to almost ask to get bit. lol If kept as a pet they are kept in a dry cage and fed fish either by hand or in a water bowl that they can access.

They are the fastest and easiest snake I have ever tamed and had two that would eat fish from my hand after three days in captivity. They were later released back to the lake they came from.

That is about all I remember right now. Been a few years since I handled snakes.

LOL Sandy, I'm not sure I'm a snake fancier. I just ended up with them and I'm trying to make lemonade out of lemons! I don't feel right evicting them, when I've made a great habitat for them. I just hope they are vegetarians......and only eat invasive plants. haha

Lisa......I don't think you need to worry about me squeezing down low on them. LOL! Actually, my motherly instincts have kicked in twice and I rescued 2 frogs out of its mouth, while gently stepping on it.
Have you ever heard a frog crying while half-way down a snake's mouth?? :(
I heard a green frog today and the tree frogs were singing tonight and the toad is back. I'm just crossing my fingers that my snakes are all on diets!

Hubs thinks the big one is a female & the two smaller ones are suitors vying for attention.

Me...I don't have a clue. Just enjoying the really cool pic here =]

You do know snakes because in the water snake world the adult females are larger and that is 1 f with 2 males.

Your not far off because water snakes have live young while as you know some snakes lay eggs.

In this case its a female with 2 males who are interested in her (could be sons from yrs past)

Crying Frog! RE: water snake family

July 2009, I was walking out front to get the paper, and I heard this pitiful cry. It was a little frog crying. Well, turns out that a snake had the frog's leg. I felt so sorry for the little frog. He was saying "Help me please!" I got mad and ran into the garage and got a shovel and held down the snake until he let go of the frog. The little frog hopped off! After he hopped off, I let the snake go. He wasn't hurt. I don't know where the snake went, but I hope he leaves my frogs alone! I think it was some kind of garter snake. Bad snake. Go eat someone your own size. Like I said, the snake disappeared and I know he wasn't hurt. Just detained from eating my little frog.

I have had (Ophidiophobia) a/k/a Snakephobia, i.e. Fear of snakes. Growing up in Indiana with a grandmother that also had it, made mine just get worse. After living in Florida and then Houston and now south Texas, out in the country, I've had to work on getting over it. It hasn't been easy, but I no longer kill snakes unless they are poisonous. And after having studied snakes and learned which are poisonous and which are not, has made my life much easier. I'm still afraid if I don't know they are around and fall on me, which they have done from time to time, but I'm getting better everyday and appreciate what role they play in our world.
