Mallard nesting

We had a pair of Mallards fly into our pond several weeks ago and have been ther e since. They have been great fun to watch and we've even seen a duck fight for the hand of the lady. Yesterday Mrs Duck finally decided to make her nest under shrubs in our front yard. We're hoping to see babies in about a month. Has anyone else had this experience? We will be new grandduckparents so we were wondering what to expect.

Yes, I had a duck build a nest and lay 12 eggs under a shrub in the front yard. Unfortunately, the raccoons found them. At the display gardens, a duck had a nest in a bed of lavender and the following year behind a large ornamental grass. Raccoons got those too. Nests that are isolated often are targets while those in colonies seem to have better luck. One of the few isolated nests I know of that survived was behind a bush next to the drive-in window of a Taco restaurant. The employees had to play crossing guards for the ducklings. Momma duck showed up the next year too. Apparently ducks are persistent about location even when there are huge obstacles such as lines of waiting cars and exhaust.

A pair showed up on my little pond a few years ago and swam around for an hour but evidently Mrs Mallard didn't care for the decor or location and they flew away. I found out later from this forum that they make a terrible muddy mess of ponds so I wasn't disappointed after all. Min

She has made her nest about 10 feet from the street and 2 feet from the sidewalk. We have had problems with possums but no racoons. Maybe the activity will keep predators at bay.

I hope they do well. How exciting to wait for your little ducklings! Post pics when they are out and about.
